Pick Three Audiobook Summary

In this motivational handbook–both a business how-to and self-help guide–the New York Times bestselling author of Dot Complicated takes on the fallacy of the “well-balanced” life, arguing that the key to success is learning to be well-lopsided.

Work. Sleep. Fitness. Family. Friends. Pick Three.

In an increasingly demanding world, we’ve been told that we can do everything–maintain friendships, devote ourselves to work, spend time with family, stay fit, and get enough sleep. We just need to learn to balance it all. Randi Zuckerberg doesn’t believe in being well-balanced. We can’t do it all every day, she contends, and trying to do so only leaves us frustrated and feeling inadequate. But we can succeed if we Pick Three.

Randi first introduced the concept of Pick Three in a tweet–“The Entrepreneur’s Dilemma”–that went viral. Now, in this book, she expands on her philosophy and inspires others to follow her lead. From entrepreneurs to professionals, busy parents to students, Randi can help everyone learn to reject the unrealistic burden of balance and enjoy success in their own lives–by picking the most important areas to focus on in any given day.

This practical handbook includes stories from Randi’s career learning that there’s no such thing as a perfect balance–as well as insights and examples from other professionals at the top of the biggest businesses in Silicon Valley, new moms searching for permission to focus on family, and recent graduates convinced they should have it all under control, including Arianna Huffington, Reshma Saujani, Laurie Hernandez, and Brad Takei. We can’t have it all every day, and that’s okay, Randi reminds us. Pick Three is her much-needed guide to learning to embrace the well-lopsided life.

The book has a good underlying concept. Just did not need to be a book, a long-form article would have sufficed.

LET'S GET LOPSIDEDEnlightenment in making choices for a healthier and happier you. It's okay not to do it all, making choices, and yes, even saying no. In Pick Three, it is placing things in a priority that works for you. Choices of the BIG FIVE--Work; Sleep; Family; Fitness; and Friends. With the message of "You Can Have It All" --just not every day. I won a copy of this book during a Goodreads giveaway. I am under no obligation to leave a review or rating and do so voluntarily. So that others may also enjoy this book, I am paying it forward by donating it to my local library.

FIVE STARS...For Randi...You will fall in love with Randi Zuckerberg's funny and witty sense of humor throughout the book while she tells you how she is so lopsided. Pick Three is ABSOLUTELY a “do-able”, easy method for anyone, a housewife raising children, a business executive and doctors, etc… attaining your daily goals using Pick Three that when you follow correctly is EXTREMELY effective. Pick Three helps you to choose from your everyday categories: Fitness, Work, Family, Friends & Sleep and instead of trying to accomplish ALL of these tasks every day without feeling bad about yourself or guilty that you haven't completed ALL of your daily goals AGAIN… Randi tells you to choose just 3: Work, Family, Sleep and to change your choices each day so the next day I might choose: Fitness, Work, Friends, but YOU ONLY GET TO CHOOSE 3...That's the point of the book. Use Pick 3 and you will start to prioritize your categories and find out you work (studying, learning a new skill, job) too much or spend to little time with friends (lunch, drinks, out to an event) and you might be a little lopsided. Like Randi. I thoroughly enjoyed Randi's book Pick Three. I am using the Pick Three method myself. I am discovering my daily tasks can be soooo much more efficient and productive using The Pick Three.

I discovered this book during my early stages of my career as a medical doctor. Yes, it was a perfect timing, as I saw that my life started to fall apart, due to busy work schedule. Contrary to the popular belief about the so-called “Well-balanced Life”, this book delivered an alternative, called “Living Lopsided”. 🙌🏻It started with the notion that we can’t achieve anything important by striving to HAVE IT ALL in a day. Or even if we can, it will be stressful and unsustainable! So, this book explored one big idea: “Instead of trying to do everything every single day, what if I look at THE MAJOR BUCKETS OF MY LIFE and PICK THREE? That way, I can do these three things WELL and I can pick a different three TOMORROW.”🤔“The major buckets of life” explained in this book consists of: Work, sleep, family, fitness, and friends. These five pillars are undebatable to be fundamental in life. This book gave me a mental-switch to only prioritize three pillars each day, for example, today I choose to do pick work, family, and fitness. And, tomorrow, I choose to pick sleep, fitness, and friends. That way, I can focus only on three aspects without the stress of thinking of something else. 👊🏻In summary, I will leave this review with my favorite quote from the book: “If life sees you lopsided toward Work, that’s awesome. Stop feeling guilty about the things you’re not choosing and give your self permission to kick ass in your career. If you’re not choosing Work right now, you’re also doing great! Whatever you choose to be lopsided in, dedicate yourself fully and do it well!”🗣 (page 75)

Randi Zuckerberg knows what it's like to feel like you have to do it all, and how there are never enough hours in the day to do so. She also acknowledges that a "balanced" life is a myth that even those who think they are accomplishing one are fooling themselves. It is physically impossible to successfully function in all aspects of life. Our current culture is too distracting, busy, and complicated to do so. Therefore, she suggests the concept of "Pick Three" -- each day, choose three aspects of your life that you are going to attack to the best of your ability. Everything else may get minor attention until it's their turn for the "pick three". Zuckerberg makes such a compelling argument with this notion of a deliberately chosen "lopsided" life that I made sure to mention (as pass around) this book at my most recent professional development summit. I am a mentor to other school librarians in my state and I felt that Zuckerberg's concept of Pick Three was just the gameplan they needed to accomplish the goals they are striving for in our profession. I have also shared aspects of this book with my husband, who (according to Pick Three) is working on a side hustle in real estate. I strongly feel that all professionals, regardless of experience or age, should read Zuckerberg's Pick Three: You Can Have It All (Just Not Every Day) and try to implement it in their own lives.

The reason I picked this book up was because the title and premise of the book reminded me of what I used to say to my husband when I was a stay at home Mom (in the throws of some pretty intense physical pain, PTSD, anxiety, exhaustion, and depression without treatment): I can cook dinner, clean the house, grocery shop, manage the house....pick two. I have since been working with some Docs and am taking anti-anxiety meds, pain meds (but not the typical pain meds...meds for other things all together that for some reason has helped the pain)...and now I am able to work. Even with all of that help, working is incredibly exhausting. Now I tell him the same as above but with "work" added. Trying to do everything is impossible for me but I look around at others who seem to have it ALL together....house is clean, job is great, shopping is totally on point, dinner is made every night, and all is managed in the house....how in the hell do they do it. Well, according to Randi, the aren't doing any of them well. If I were to gauge others with my abilities, I would agree. So now what? She introduces her "Pick 3" idea...of course your lists might be different, but for her, she can pick three items from the following list: Family, Work, Fitness, Sleep, and Friends. What I loved about this idea is that even though you would follow the idea, all of the details were personal. I'm looking forward to coming up with my list and starting to ONLY focus on three things each day.

Pick Three speaks to a generation of people who are overwhelmed and overworked. As youngsters, many are taught about the “values” of multitasking, even though, in actuality, spreading yourself too thin can be detrimental. As the subtitle of the book so eloquently states, you can have it all, just not every day. Randi’s basic idea is that you can choose three important areas on which to focus each day. The examples she includes are: work, sleep, family, fitness, and friendship. Randi also emphasizes that variety is paramount-that you should alternate between each area on a daily basis. Some might have other things in their life which are very important, but you can still pick only three a day. The end of the book includes a section where you can track, reflect upon, and write your daily choices. Pick Three is a must read for anyone who needs to know about the importance of being healthily unbalanced.

Thought this was a great book with a revolutionary idea. That said, it definitely was a little dragged out, and I felt the stories were singular and one dimensional, with one example for each category. I read it over vacation, but someone tight on time could just read the first chapter to get the jist of it. It’s written in a modern, compelling style which makes it light, easy read and I found the idea striking in it’s difference to common practice. I do think she makes it seem necessary to follow this format to live a balanced (or well-lopsided, as she put it) life, but it clearly isn’t, which many authors do but it doesn’t make it right. In summary- it’s a great idea, but don’t waste your time reading the whole thing if you’re really desperate for this solution, which many people looking into this book may be. ;) If not, enjoy!

The book talks about the concept of prioritizing 3 things everyday, instead of trying to juggle all your priorities at once. We don’t have to prioritize work, friends, fitness and family all in one day. We end up falling short when we over compromise. Even a few months after having read the book, I still find myself practicing what Randi is saying: listing my top 3 priorities every day, and focusing on those. The only little downside of this book is that she made a lot of comparison with herself to her brother, sometimes at the point of self-deprication.

Great concepts about improving quality of life and not burning out, easy to apply and fun selection of other people's perspective. But I would like to have heard from more everyday people - those struggling to make ends meet or get their business off the ground, (more) single parents, those dependent on public transportation, credit card debt or student loans... More stories from Randi's salad days would have been a plus too.

Great book! Not revolutionary new principles, but excellent insight and if incorporated, can positively change your life. For me, I work out every single day. It’s a non-negotiable, so that’s an area where I differ. But, I highly recommend this read!

I loved the ideas presented in the book and they make A LOT of sense, but I never took the time to build the practice into my daily life.Generally, I extrapolated what I could use with a little less effort, but it was a good read with SOLID advice.
