Third Girl (Hercule Poirot #38), Agatha ChristieThird Girl is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and first published in the UK by the Collins Crime Club in November 1966. It features her Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and the recurring character Ariadne Oliver. The novel is notable for being the first in many years in which Poirot is present from beginning to end. It is uncommon in that the investigation includes discovering the first crime, which happens comparatively late in the novel. Norma Restarick seeks help from Poirot, believing she may have committed murder. When she sees him in person, she flees, saying he is too old. He pursues the case finding that Ariadne Oliver sent Norma to him. He believes there is a murder that prompted Norma’s fears. Poirot and Mrs Oliver gather information, visiting her parents’ home and her apartment building. Norma does not return home after a weekend visit to her father and stepmother. Mrs Oliver finds her in a café by chance with her boyfriend David. Poirot meets Norma at the café, where she mentions the death again. After describing the odd times where she cannot recall what has happened she leaves in fear again. Mrs Oliver trails David, ending up in the hospital after being coshed on the head upon leaving his art studio. Poirot arranges for Dr Stilling fleet to follow Norma; he pulls her to safety from a close call with speeding traffic and brings her to his place for treatment and for safety. Norma’s father Andrew abandoned her and her mother Grace when Norma was about 5 years old. Andrew had run off with a woman in a relationship that ended soon after. He traveled in Africa in financially successful ventures. Norma lived with her mother until Grace’s death two and a half years before. Andrew returned to England after his brother Simon died a year earlier, to work in the family firm, arriving with a new young wife. Norma can recognize nothing familiar in this man, but accepts him. Norma is the third girl in her flat in the fashion of young women advertising for a third girl to share the rent. The main tenant is secretary to her newfound father; the other girl, Frances, travels often for the art gallery that employs her. ...

This is a very entertaining and fast read. I read it and simultaneously listened to the audiobook narrated by Hugh Fraser, who, once again, did a terrific job. There is an adaptation for the TV, with David Suchet playing the beloved detective. This was a re-read, but first time in English. I liked it more this time, plus the additional pleasure of the audiobook.I had previously rated it 3 stars. Perhaps something was lost in translation or I was too young when I read it for the first time.

I really enjoyed this later Christie novel, the 38th! Poirot book published in 1966. Particularly the early sections had me smiling as Christie herself seemed to be poking fun at her character Poirot and also herself (I assume the character, Ariadne Oliver, a crime writer is a bit of a parody of herself). There’s also lots of comments by the older characters looking at the younger generations and being judgemental, the generation gap seems to be huge in the late 60s!The story opens with a young woman arrives at Poirots house and tells him she “might have committed a murder” but she flees before telling him any details because he’s “too old”. This obviously offends Poirot but hooks him into the mystery. I loved the description of this girl There were hundreds of girls looking exactly the same. They all looked dirty. And yet—a contradiction in terms—this one had the look of having been recently drowned and pulled out of a river. Such girls, he reflected, were not perhaps really dirty. They merely took enormous care and pains to look so.She is referred to as “Ophelia” for much of the book thereafter. The main young man in the story is described as “the peacock” because of his velvet clothing and long hair. The book does drag a little in the middle where it appears Poirot isn’t getting anywhere and Mrs Oliver is a bit of distraction but essential for solving the mystery. So Christie has written a clever plot that I thought I’d guessed what was going on but I was surprised as everything comes together at the end in a very satisfying way.An excellent, fun read!

"Where there is murder, anything can happen." Can you believe I have gone my whole life without reading an Agatha Christie novel?!?I know, right?! Me either! ;)So I picked this one up, along with a few others, at my local used bookstore on a whim and decided to give her a shot. I am really glad that I did, because this book was very enjoyable!Hercule Poirot is a Belgium detective who is approached by a young girl who thinks she has committed a murder. Shortly after she disappears and Poirot must track down the clues to get to the bottom of the mystery of this strange girl.I really liked Poirot a lot. He was charming and clever and it was great fun watching him put all the clues together to solve the case. I am absolute rubbish as guessing the endings to mystery books so it was a delightful surprise to me when I reached the end and it was not what I expected at all! All in all, I really liked this story and look forward to continuing my reading relationship with Monsieur Poirot! :)

Hercule Poirot is now in his 35th adventure; after this one, he has only three more contemporary appearances -- in Hallow'een Party, Elephants Can Remember, and Curtain.Third Girl is set smack in the mid-sixties. It's a time when men are wearing such clothes as "elaborate velvet waistcoat[s:], skin-tight pants," and wearing their hair long in "rich curls of chestnut," while women were wearing "the clothes of their generation: black high leather boots, white open-work stockings of doubtful cleanliness, a skimpy skirt and a long and sloppy pullover of heavy wool".The Beatles proclaim in 1966 that they're more popular than Jesus. The younger generation is experimenting with drugs and getting high. Girls aren't staying at home much after leaving school, going off to the cities to find jobs and live in apartments, often doubling up or adding a "third" girl to help with the rent. It is just such a "third girl," Norma Restarick, who early one morning finds herself with Hercule Poirot, to tell him that she might have committed a murder, but then proclaims Poirot too old, and disappears. He's obviously intrigued, and finds out the girl's identity only when Ariadne Oliver, the mystery novelist, begins discussing a party she'd been to earlier where she'd met this young woman. From that point, the two begin investigating Norma's past and present, trying to discover if she's unbalanced, or if there's someone that might mean her harm. Poirot looks for patterns & death, and Ariadne tries methods that her detective, Sven Hjerson, might use in her popular mystery books. As usual, there are plenty of suspects and red herrings throughout the novel, and this time Christie puts a secret up her sleeve that she doesn't reveal until the end -- a bit of duplicity on her part which wasn't really fair, but worked. I thought the final solution was well done and although the clues were there all along, I still managed to be surprised by the ending, which a) I felt was quite satisfying and b) I should have figured out after the breadcrumb trail of clues Christie left behind. And while the story may seem a bit muddled from time to time, it's still well worth the read. Poirot, without a doubt, is one of my favorite detectives ever, with his fastidious mannerisms and personality. Even toward the end of his career his little grey cells are as busy and sharp as ever; Miss Lemon, the secretary par excellence, makes an appearance, always a step ahead of Poirot, and then there's Ariadne Oliver, a rather unique character, often living off of her intuition or using her mystery novelist skills to offer help in Poirot's investigation. While she does provide some comic relief and comes off as a bit of a bumbler from time to time, she actually manages to also provide a few valuable clues to Poirot from time to time. At first I was a bit unsure as to whether or not I would enjoy this novel, but it ended up being a treat. This must be one that either I read eons ago and have totally forgotten, or that somehow I managed to miss until now. I can recommend it, definitely, BUT ... if you're looking for the recently televised Third Girl, you'll find that there's quite a difference between page and screen.

Weltenwanderer

4.5 starsI was so surprised after finishing this book. The whole book was dedicated to a crime that seemed didn't exists at all. There was no death, no killer, just a bunch of potential suspects that added to nothing. It seemed like Poirot was holding straws - he kept looking for clues, clues of something that didn't happen. Yes, we would think he grew old now, he was not as shrewd and quick as before. However, those final chapters - they were mind blowing. Now I understood. Murders. Motives. All of them. We even had the responsible culprits. And Poirot, as always, solved the mysteries. All the puzzles now were in the right place. This book was brilliant. Definitely brilliant, a very true definition to Poirot and his intelligence.

4.6/5 ⭐️STORY 4.5/5 -it was slow to start but once things really got rolling it was EXTREMELY well crafted. I didn’t love the very ending though and by that I mean the last line or two of the book fell flat for me.CHARACTERS 4.5/5 - I love Poirot and Ms. Oliver and some of the supporting characters were good too but I found myself getting confused as to who was who.WRITING 5/5 - like I said this was extremely well crafted. I couldn’t believe how smart the mystery was step by step.ENJOYMENT 4.5/5 - some of the old school language was hard for me to read and made my brain hurt but the story and mystery were SO worth..I loved this book!

There is only one draw back with this novel- There are just too many coincidences. And these coincidences help Poirot solve the case. For the first time we see Poirot genuinely aggrieved when a young girl tells him that he is Old! It takes all the patience and diplomacy of Mrs. Oliver to soothe his nerves. Otherwise a nice intriguing plot with usual twisted ending. Interesting read.

I enjoyed reading Third Girl. Me of Christie’s later novels. A young girl goes to Poirot tells him she has murdered someone then says he’s to old for the case and runs away. Poirot through his friend Ariadne Oliver identifies the girl as Norma Restarick who comes from a wealthy family. Her father who she has not seen since she was five ran off to Africa with his mistress Louise. He has returned with his wife Mary who Norma hates. Overlaid is the 1960s drug scene. Norma believes she is doing and seeing weird things. Her flat mates Claudia and Frances also think she is a bit mad. Coupled with this Norma’s boyfriend David who dresses like a peacock is a conman artist who is mixed up in various cons. Poirot eventually pieces the clues together such as a portrait of her father Andrew Restarick, a suicide in the block of flats where Norma lives with Claudia and Frances and the motive. Is it money, jealousy, hate or revenge. A good read.
