To Live and Die in Dixie Audiobook Summary

“Bright and sassy.” — New York Times Book Review

The second entry in the thoroughly original and witty series about Callahan Garrity in which the cleaning lady cum sleuth runs afoul of right-wing radicals and a dangerous collector when she’s hired to find the valuable and controversial diary of a Civil War madam.

Former Atlanta police officer Callahan is known for scrubbing all kinds of muck, but she has no idea what she’s getting herself into when she is hired by Elliott Littlefield, a notorious Atlanta antiques dealer.

Right from the start, Callahan’s job turns into a lively quest to find a priceless Civil War diary penned by an infamous madam. Soon Callahan and her team become entangled with a motley group of Civil War collectors, right-wing extremists, and nosy teens, making the case messier and tougher to clean.

The witty Callahan Garrity mysteries by Mary Kay Andrews always entertain and delight.

Decided to read the Callahan Garrity series written by Kathy Hogan Trocheck who now writes under the name Mary Kay Andrews. Love all the Andrews books and loved this Trocheck one. Just ordered two more from amazonCallahan Garrity quits her job as a policeman and opens a cleaning business in Atlanta called House Mouse. The women who work for her are worth the read all by them selves. Callahan aso gets a private detective's license and mixes detecting with cleaning. the plot of this one is very convoluted and suspects pop up left and right but Callahan straightens it all out in the end

I'm glad I continued on with the Callahan Garrity series as she is growing on me. The story is a murder mystery along with a theft. Callahan is investigating the theft, but also helps the police solve the murder. This was an enjoyable story.

"I should have known that when they said a cleaning lady found a body that it would have been you." So begins another mystery with Callahan and her team of maids investigating a murder and missing Civil war documents. She definitely knows how to get in trouble but save the day as well. I am also thankful for her friendship to Jocelyn, the sister of the victim who suffers from an eating disorder.

I’m really enjoying this Mary K Andrews series. There is a little bit of everything in the story line; mystery, suspense, humor and a little romance. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Great series. The house cleaning business is a great theme for getting into all kinds of intrigue. The characters really draw you in and the ending was quite suspenseful.

I suppose we all get what we deserve eventually. This is a solid series so far. Especially if you like Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone, Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone, or Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott and Sigrid Harald.

Callahan Garrity leaves her house-cleaner smock behind and puts her private detective hat back on.She's got a big new house to clean, with a big fee attached, and all is fine for about 15 minutes -- that's when one of her House Mouse girls finds a body upstairs. The teen girl had left home and was living in the mansion's carriage house, which doubled as the antique shop run by the homeowner, Elliot Littlefield. Littlefield has been convicted of murder before (he walked on a technicality), but does that mean he killed this girl? Who was the girl's boyfriend, and why was she so reluctant to talk about the guy she thought had gotten her pregnant? And what happened to the Civil War relics, including a priceless diary penned by a Richmond madam, that are missing from the mansion? Callahan and her mother, Edna, are on the case again, and running risks and crossing lines they shouldn't...they might be on a collision course with danger again. These books are really fun. They're not deep, but they're well written, the characters are fully formed, and the stories tie up neatly (if not always perfectly plausibly) at the end. I'm looking up the next one at my local library right now.

Callahan Garrity has no idea what she's getting into when she agrees to work for infamous antiques dealer Elliot Littlefield. The first day on the job she and her crew discover the bloodied body of a young woman in a bedroom -- and are soon on the trail of a priceless Civil War diary stolen by the killer. As if two crimes aren't enough, deadly serious collectors, right-wing radicals, and impulsive teenagers make the case even more difficult to tidy up ... and more dangerous.I enjoyed the first in this series so much, I decided to jump on the second while it was still available at my library. This one is just as good as the first. I am so invested in Callahan and her mom Edna. This one takes place shortly after the first and we get a whole new cast of characters that are just as quirky. You are never sure who to pin the murder on and have several theories before it is all said and done. I love that. Bottom Line: This is a super fun cozy mystery series if you enjoy that kind of thing!

Another oldie but goodie from Kathy Hogan Trochek. This novel was copywriter in 1993 and I doubt if one can find it in a bookstore or library but this series can be found on EBay and Amazon at really good prices. So, if you are looking for a good mystery that is a fast and easy read, and one that is suitable for Grandma these would be good choices.Callahan Garrity, as you know from the first book in this series is an ex Atlanta Policewoman turned private investigator and the proud partner of the House Mouse cleaning service. Callahan gets involved with a murder while she and get cohorts take on a house cleaning job. Many of the locations in Atlanta are real as are some of the characters.A great read for those who have lived or are living in Atlanta, to say nothing of those who enjoy a good mystery.

Mary Kay Andrews writes about a young girl with bulimia who befriends Callahan and helps with her detective case. She tries to stop the cycle of eating and purging, but she needs professional help. Callahan is still dealing with breast cancer and wants to take an experimental drug which Mac and her mother Edna don't approve. There are some serious side effects, but Callahan feels it will be right for her, if they don't give her the placebo.Mac wants Callahan to move in with him in his cottage in the country, but even though he would be comfortable living with Edna also, it is too far from their business. She is resisting for now.

Callahan is at it again only this time she falls upon a murder after entering a murderers house to clean. House Mouse could use a little boost in income so when Neva Jean finds them a mansion to clean in a hurry they hesitate then jump at the oportunity for the extra cash only they get more than they bargained for.A dead body. Teacher sleeping with his student. His wife sleeping with an expelled student and a "love" so strong between the married couple she cant let her husbands mistress off the hook or Callahan who is investigating it all and risks exposing her. Married Love. Murder. Teenage love. Drama all encompassed into one.I am loving this series more and more as I read it.

I just read three of these books in two days. They are highly entertaining. I love love love Callahan, the main character. The other ever present cast in these books her mom, boyfriend, and her employees are just as much fun. She always seem to be able to solve the crime while almost always getting hr self killed! My only hold out on 5 scores is the ever present GD word. I’m no prude and will pop them out with the best of them however that one is off limits and sends me to prayers when I hear it. Other than that these are fun fun books.

Oh my goodness! This book #2 in this series and I am hooked. The characters in this series are unique. I so enjoy how Hillary Huber reads the characters. Hillary is fabulous at changing character voices. Callahan Garrity is my hero. Smart and confident, she gets to the bottom of her investigation even though someone is trying to kill her. She shows them they shouldn't mess with an ex cop or her employees at House Mouse. She is determined to bring them to justice. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
