Twelve and a Half Audiobook Summary

In his sixth business book, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and investor Gary Vaynerchuk explores the twelve essential emotional skills that are integral to his life–and business–success and provides today’s (and tomorrow’s) leaders with critical tools to acquire and develop these traits.

For decades, leaders have relied on “hard” skills to make smart decisions, while dismissing the importance of emotional intelligence. Soft skills like self-awareness and curiosity aren’t quantifiable; they can’t be measured on a spreadsheet and aren’t taught in B-schools or emphasized in institutions. We’ve been taught that emotional intelligence is a “nice to have” in business, not a requirement. But soft skills can actually accelerate business success, Gary Vaynerchuk argues. For analytical minds, it’s challenging to understand how to get “better” at being self-aware, curious, or empathetic–or even why it’s important to try.

In this wise and practical book, Gary explores the 12 human ingredients that have led to his success and happiness and provides exercises to help you develop these traits yourself. He also shares what the “half” is–that emotional ingredient of leadership he’s weakest at and makes the most effort to improve. Working through the ideas and exercises in the book, he teaches you how to discover your own “halves” and offers insight on how to strengthen them.

Gary’s secret to success is using these twelve traits in varying mixtures, depending on the situation. But how do we know when to balance patience with ambition? Humility with conviction? Gary provides real-life examples involving common business scenarios to show you how to use them together for optimum results.

This iconoclastic book will help you refine your ingredients and improve your leadership capabilities. When implemented in the proper situation, these ingredients can help leaders land promotions, retain core employees, move faster than competitors, win the loyalty of customers, and build successful organizations that last.

Gary Vee can do no wrong in my eyes. I have some criticisms of this new book, but they’re extremely subjective, and at the end of the day, this book has a ton of value and will help a lot of people. I actually didn’t even know Gary had a new book coming out, and when I found out, I immediately asked the publisher for a review copy. I binged this book in one sitting, and it really helped with the headspace I happened to be in the day I read it. As someone who was recently laid off after two years due to the pandemic and is trying to do the entrepreneur thing again, this book was jam-packed with some good ol’ Gary Vee wisdom and tough love. The book is short, and it’s an easy read. Basically, Gary breaks down most of his main principles such as gratitude, empathy, accountability, humility, ambition, and more. Each chapter teaches and reminds the reader how to persevere through the difficult times while also being compassionate towards others. If you’re someone who has followed Gary Vee’s work for years, you already know where Gary stands on all of these topics, so it’s repeat information, but Gary knows that, and that’s what I love about him. Many of us have thick skulls (me included), and we need this information repeated multiple times, and even though I’ve heard him say this stuff a million times, I really needed it again today. As for my criticisms, they’re minor. It’s hard to explain, but the structure threw me off a little bit. The twelve and a half “ingredients” are the first half of the book, and the second half is Gary creating scenarios as though someone was asking him for advice, and he uses the ingredients for the answers. With the book being so short, I personally would have liked it better if it was 75% - 100% on the ingredients, but it was a cool idea to create the scenarios. But like I said, that’s just my subjective opinion, and I’d still read this book again just like I have all of his other books. The book is kind of marketed towards business leaders, but every entrepreneur needs to check this book out and use the tools Gary provides.

My kids turned me on to Gary Vee years ago. His bluntness, his attitude for success and his honesty are refreshing. This book is a perfect way to reflect on your personal work ethic and the points that we should all be mindful of as we navigate the work force. With so many remote positions now, communicating effectively using talents such as kindness, patience, empathy and humility are necessary. Gary gives insight through examples and explains his logic for each point. I enjoyed the scenarios and while I can't relate to each one, there are definitely people I have worked with who would benefit from his words of wisdom! This is a quick read packed with a lot of information from someone who continually proves his prowess not only in being an entrepreneur but being a compassionate human being. Way to be an example Gary!

I follow Gary Vee on Instagram and Twitter, have sampled his podcast, downloaded his free infographic on repurposing material, and have read one of his other books...and I think this is the most fully relatable material he's published. In summary, it's really about two traits: kindness and candor, and the balance between. This is about traits such as accountability, gratitude, optimism, self-awareness, and other traits that translate to being a better business leader as well as a better person.

I loved this book so much. It’s one of those moments where a book comes into your life at the exact time you need it. Gary Vee is someone that inspires me and has helped me a lot with his content and this book again was super super helpful especially as a new business owner. What I liked about the book is that it’s not only catered towards business owners but also people working for a company in business too. So this book is really for anyone & everyone. Really good read!

This book genuinely surprised me. Although the concepts are vague in nature and Gary’s personality can be narrow minded, I admire the creativity and thoughtfulness that went into making this book. This is not a long book but as I read each night I could only ever get past a chapter a day. The concepts in part one really made me self reflect on how I see myself and the way I treat others. I truly spent a lot of time reflecting on each “Ingredient”. Part two was simple. I appreciate the addition of this part in the book but I primarily skimmed through most of it. Although it might be wise to do, I did not spend any time actually completing the activities in part three. I did look over them and self-reflect but nothing more than that.Overall, it was a great book to start 2023 with and I can see myself coming back to this book next year to reflect on.

I really don't know why I read this book lmaoLook, i've never read a business book in my life and I'm a 21 year old university student and have never had a real job, so I really was not the target audience for this book. Besides that, I think the contents of this books are extremely useful for any young professional. This is one for the finance bros and hustlers. This book really got me rolling my eyes at a lot of points though (especially whenever they mention Linkedin)

I’m an optimist, and like Gary I understand the proper meaning of the word. As such, of course I love the book. It’s validating. It stirs up thoughts, which become actions, which dictate our results. What results are pursuing?

I met Gary Vaynerchuk when he came to Vaynermedia in London and I was introduced by an employee of Gary’s. Before the meeting, I had a conversation with that employee that went like this.Me: I bet Gary is really hard to work for?Employee: Not at all, he’s one of the best managers I’ve ever had.Me: A hard task master?Employee: of course, he expects the best in people, but he supports a culture of experimentation and risk taking. That means he supports us if we make mistakes.Me: Is it a hire and fire culture?Employee: no, in fact if people are not in the right roles, Gary will create a new role that they will be better suited to.Anyway, when I met Gary, he was brilliant, he insisted on having a selfie taken with me and my business partner and he insisted in holding my first book. The thing is Gary often comes across as brash, this is compounded by his direct attitude in his previous books. He was vocal for “hustle culture” which added to his edge.In his latest book, “Twelve and half” Gary puts forward a different Gary. One that is empathetic, compassionate, self-aware, patient, in fact 12 and half emotional ingredients you need to be a leader and manager today. The book is split into three, what are the emotional ingredients that we need as leaders, real-life scenarios and finally a number of exercises to undertake.

I enjoyed Gary Vaynerchuk’s book. He discusses deploying kindness in the face of negativity, even if that feels difficult at the time.Gary has a tendency to repeat himself, which can make the information he delivers feel less fresh. But the ideas that he writes about have power behind them.I believe that the future of business will probably be forced to adapt and adopt something similar to Gary’s principles that he discusses in the book. As we all know positivity is good, but for some reason can be so difficult to achieve. Overall I would recommend Gary in moderation. Though his repeatable ideas can drag at times, they are still extremely valuable. And if you are feeling down or anxious, his concepts can be extremely therapeutic. 4/5

My mom and I have been long time fans of Gary Vee cuz of his constant promoting of positivity and kindness. When he came out with this book about gratitude, self-awareness, accountability, optimism, empathy, kindness, tenacity, curiosity, patience, conviction, humility, and ambition my mom and i couldnt help but notice that a lot of those mirror the fruit of the Spirit or are just really good qualities for anyone to have! The amount of gold nuggets in this book is too much to count. All I can say is that the book does an amazing job of explaining those traits and helping one know how to take steps to attain those traits. And honestly if we all became masters at these emotional qualities, I think everyone would greatly benefit.I would read it again so 5 stars it is!

Certainly a more cerebral and thoughtful book from a guy who is brilliant at motivating folks to stop thinking and start doing. There are essential building blocks to being a good leader in today’s business (which is way different than yesterday’s business) and Gary breaks down his top thirteen (to date) tools.Being a more seasoned leader of folks in the two newest generations, this book shed a lot of light on what it takes to connect with them and how to be an effective and more empathetic mentor and boss. I was both a little embarrassed, but thankful that I got this wisdom now rather than later. I recommended it to my Gen Z son who will benefit from it greatly to become an even stronger worker, manager and human being because of it. A great book at a great time in business.

Gary Vee is the bomb.com and I couldn’t be more obsessed with him! This is a must read book for anyone and everyone! Amazing tips about how to navigate your personal and business life with emotional intelligence and the highest level of self awareness so that you can truly become satisfied with who you are. It also helps you realize that there is no end point to growth. You can get better and become more successful no matter what age you are. Life doesn’t stop being beautiful just because you get older. If anything, if you follow the rules in this book, you’ll be wiser and happier the older you get and therefore better able to have continued success and to serve and teach others along the way! But this book and read it ASAP!

I listened to this in a day. For those that have ever wondered what motivates young Millennials and Gen Z, Gary Vee offers an explanation around our relationship with time and how it effects our values (security/money, patience/anxieties). “Extreme empathy” may have been used 100+ times throughout, but he makes his point. The stories and scenarios used to bring life to the 12 1/2 ingredients are a bit long and drawn out but I actually found the fact that some of these scenarios were brought up as big dilemmas very interesting. Provides story and perspective, what else can we ask from a business development read?
