Reading through many of the reviews of this book on goodreads it's impossible to ignore the negative feedback Cornwell received after publishing this 12th installment of her Kay Scarpetta series. I will be honest...this review comes after having read this book a second time. I was a devoted Scarpetta reader and many years ago I quit following this series after reading Blow Fly. It wasn't because I thought the book was badly written. It isn't. I have always enjoyed Patricia Cornwell's prose. My problem was that (and I will attempt to write this as to not include any spoilers for those readers who have not yet discovered this series) one of the more prominent and, in my opinion, one of the best and well-liked characters had been killed off. That was bad enough. In Blow Fly, Cornwell decides to bring him back and for some reason it rubbed me the wrong way as a long time reader. It angered me and I quit reading the series and have just, in the past few months, decided to come back to it. I began with the first book, Postmortem, and as I've re-read each book, I have been reminded why I enjoyed this series in the first place. Blow Fly is very well written. I don't agree with the majority of the negative feedback or comments that I've read about this book. I think this one is every bit as good as the older ones and will definitely continue to read the rest of this series. I have become attached to Kay and Lucy, Marino and Benton and want to find out what is in their collective future. Blow Fly was published in 2003 and Cornwell has just released her 21st Scarpetta novel this year. I have much to read in this series and look forward to the reading I have ahead of me.

I don't know what the fuss was about this book, as I had received quite a few negative comments in regards to saying it was the worst book etc, but I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! I liked the change in perspective because I felt as though Scarpetta was getting a little stale and needed a change. "The Last Precinct" (the novel prior to this one) was the worst one I had read and had I not known it was paramount to the following books I would have thrown it away. However "Blow Fly" was a refreshing change. Reading in the third person allowed for viewing things through all the other characters' eyes and didn't restrict everything through the eyes of Scarpetta. Her continual grumbling and carry-on in "The Last Precinct" was enough for me to tell her shove it, but this book gave different insights as we saw things from the killers, the cops and our other favourite characters' perspective. "Blow Fly" I found was a refreshing change which gave the many answers for which readers sought throughout the previous novel (which gave anything but). We also saw a new chapter opening for Scarpetta as well an earth-shattering secret for her, which began several books earlier (unbeknownst to the reader), revealed in this one. I thoroughly enjoyed "Blow Fly" and look forward to the next one in the series as we see the characters fall into their new roles, and Scarpetta settle into private practice in Miami

The Dr. Kay Scarpetta series is one of my very favorite mystery series. The character development from book to book is quite good, you really get to know them. The bad guys are really bad and, of course, there is one that keeps returning. There's some real good twists. Also, I loved the forensics.

** spoiler alert ** this is one of those books that fucking too fucking forever for shit to happen. a reviewer on here said it took about #300 pages or so for it to really start to get moving along and they were 100% correct it did take about that long, having just finished i am really honestly surprised how good the book ended up being, however having said that it's not going to be among my favorites in the series, for one thing writing it in 3rd person was a really shitty idea i get she wanted to do something different i can understand that.i am a writer of sorts myself i write poetry but i've never submitted anything though to get published. that said when things come into your mind if you aren't a writer you can try and at least with me anyways you can try and change it but it doesn't work that way at least not with me. my point is to take a guess Cornwell had so many ideas that i think she had far to many characters recently i counted #7 you hear from their perspective, there's Kay, Lucy, Marino, Jay, Bev, Nio, Rudy, there's even a teenager who finds an arm.well i see that's more than #7 oh well. my point is Kay got lost in the shuffle there were far too many characters in it.now if it wasn't a series about Kay Scarpetta and just a regular book i wouldn't be saying at all. i will say that it does resolve some story lines that begin in Point of Origin such as why did Benton fake his death? that we learn in this book that he did. we learn Marino and Lucy knew about it for years and hid it from Kay. we also learn why she went off the handle after he died in Point of Origin and that was nice too. for those who have read the First #11 books it took me quite awhile to get used to it being in 3rd person. but once i did i was fine, at least i can say i think it was better than the last book by far. yeah it did leave you hanging with a cliff hanger and that's due to the wolfman being on the loose again. i don't think it left that many things unanswered but that's my own opinion anyways.

It is hard getting used to the third person recitations of these later Kay Scarpetta novels, but they do have one positive aspect, you really are getting to know the mindsets of Lucy, Marino and Benton. Yes, Benton, and I don't think I'm revealing anything by saying his name. The book also introduces at least one new character who will play a part in future novels, and his backstory explains why Lucy really left the FBI. It also brings to a closure many of the previous novels threads, but not everything. Although it seems a bit scattered at first the book builds with a lot of suspense and really comes together at the end. I do miss the first person narration of Kay but I can't say this was a bad entry into the series.

"'You haven't lost it', Lucy tells her. 'Your removal from power was an illusion. Politics. Your true power has never been imposed by the outside world, and it follows that the outside world can't take it away from you.' ". Kay Scarpetta's new life as a forensic consultant is moving along. She's closed up shop and moved into a rental in Florida and has a dog named Billy and her secretary Rose has also retired to Florida although no one really believed she retired, including her. When she is contacted by a Louisiana coroner about a cold case that still baffles them. While consulting with them, she hears that a former pursuer, Jean Baptiste Chandonne as requested to see her. Does she really want to see him after he almost killed her? Kay's niece Lucy, and her friend Pete Marino are also here and supportive as Kay tries to fit all the pieces together, because, as we have known from her earlier "adventures" that "the dead are impatient"I am a big Cornwell fan, but the first part of this book almost made me discard it. I am very glad I didn't. It's one of those compelling reads that will suck you in and you can't climb out until it's done. Highly recommended 5/5

I enjoyed this installment of the Scarpetta series. With the exception of the way a certain character returned. I won't say more because I don't want to include spoilers.

That was a wild ride! Just as I thought storylines would calm down, they ramped up to an agonizingly suspenseful crescendo. Some details do get disturbingly graphic. Reader be warned. But these stories do tend to grab hold of you and not let go. They are intelligent and expertly crafted.

Continuano le avventure, anche se sarebbe il caso di dire, le disavventura di Kay Scarpetta, in continua lotta con un mostro. Per la seconda volta, c'è un colpo di scena proprio inaspettato. Consigliato.

While I had a hard time getting into this book and following the different writing style, I do understand the need for the change. Because this one was not written from Scarpetta's point of view, it was able to follow multiple people simultaneously. This allowed for multiple storylines to be wrapped up in one book instead of multiple.

Very happy with it so far, Cornwell's writing verges on poetic prose.
