There's snow and Mama is outside. Walter and Charlie follow Mama across the pasture and see big sister sledding down the big hill. They try sliding down the hill. "This is great!". He starts going up the hill. His ears aren't floppy any more. There goes everybody having a blast except me. They are calling for Walter. What does he do? He's cold. Does he just stay there? You get to do the fun stuff now. Listen/ read to find out all the great things that happen in this book and look at the super illustrations of Charlie and his family. Wait!!! The most important thing. Where's Walter? This is one of the Charlie the Ranch Dog Series of children's books. There are many books written for the different stages of reading. This is a Level 1book which means simple sentence for eager new readers. I borrowed this book from Amazon Prime and so can you.

In Charlie the Ranch Dog: Charlie’s Snow Day, by Ree Drummond and Diane deGroat, we follow the tale of a beagle named Charlie who has been waiting all day to go out in the snow. When his family finally takes him out, Charlie gets a lot more than he bargained for and goes through a rollercoaster of emotion, adventure, and fun! Overall, the book is a delightful read for children who like dogs or the snow, but there are a few inconsistencies. Though this book says “Beginning Reader 1” and classifies as an early reader picture book, some of the word choice strikes me as slightly inappropriate. The very first impression I have of the book was one with a little doubt a child would be easily able to understand all of the words like “pasture” and “slog.” However, the amount of child-like action in the book is more than enough to make up for any confusing word choice. The pictures with the most activity are exquisitely illustrated with the realistic shadowing of the snow and detailed characters. It is refreshing to see a book in a snowy setting that does not simply color the page white. The attention to detail is refreshing to see in an early reader book, as are the changing page styles. The diagonal lines on many of the pages are eye-catching and nerve-racking to readers who feel like they are on the adventure with Charlie. None of the pages have a defined border because of the book’s style. The only page that hints at a border is one of a closeup on the main character’s happy face, but the border is meant to be the surrounding snow. The narrator, or Charlie the dog, talks directly to the readers and tells them of his adventures. Instead of readers simply hearing the story through text, the pictures take them on the journey with him! Many of the pictures are drawn diagonally or on an incline so that children feel like they are climbing up or sliding down the snowy mountains with Charlie. The text and illustrations offer different perspectives. The text is written primarily in the voice of Charlie, who exclaims his excitement and feelings about different parts of the adventure. The pictures, however, are not seen in the eyes of Charlie but in the eyes of the reader. The reader is treated as a separate character in the story being talked to by Charlie, so the interplay between the text and illustrations is one mirroring an ongoing conversation. The artwork is an interesting mix of realism and cartoon https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1.... The humans are drawn realistically, as are the surrounding mountains. The cartoon art is evident in the drawings of the animal characters. While dogs in real life can be very expressive, the dogs in the story have the same level of expression as a human. The font never changes throughout the entire book, and is composed of big bold letters easy to read. The book has a lot of onomatopoeia in it, primarily in the pages with the most action or climatic scenes.

What an exciting day! Charlie the ranch dog has woken up to discover that snow fell during the night. He can't wait to go play, but it turns out that the snow is, well, cold. And deep. And hard to run in. And basically not as fun as it looks. Just as he's ready to go back inside, though, Charlie learns his friend Walter is missing -- and he's the only one who can find him. Suddenly there's something a lot more important than warming up his frozen ears and paws: saving the day. This simple story is told in the dog's viewpoint. It would be especially good to use near the first snow of the year, when many kids charge out into the cold with enthusiasm but, like Charlie, end up overdoing it and becoming chilled and fatigued. Would also make a good opener to lessons about proper winter protection (hat, gloves, etc.) or overlooking temporary discomfort to help others who are in need.

This was a cute book. It has snowed and Charlie is going out to enjoy himself. He does find that the snow does have it's disadvantages and soon tires of it and wants to go in. Before that can happen he has to perform the usual heroic deed. A fun book that children will definitely enjoy. An early reader (level 1) so best suited for beginning readers, or those who still have their stories read to them.

This is just another cute book about charlie. What will happen when the ground is covered with snow? What will charlie do today outside in the snow? It's a cute book told by the dog. How can it get any cuter? My daughter read it to me and I loved all the pictures. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone.
