Death in the Clouds Audiobook Summary

Hercule Poirot must solve a perplexing case of midair murder in Death in the Clouds when he discovers that the woman in seat two of the airborne aeroplane he’s traveling on is quite unexpectedly–and unnaturally–deceased.

From seat No. 9, Hercule Poirot was ideally placed to observe his fellow air passengers on the short flight from Paris to London. Over to his right sat a pretty young woman, clearly infatuated with the man opposite; ahead, in seat No. 13, sat a countess with a poorly concealed cocaine habit; across the gangway in seat No. 8, a writer of detective fiction was being troubled by an aggressive wasp.

Yes, Poirot is almost ideally placed to take it all in, except what he did not yet realize was that behind him, in seat No. 2, sat the slumped, lifeless body of a woman. Murdered, and likely by someone in Poirot’s immediate proximity.

DEATH BY BLOW DART!A crusty old moneylender known for keeping blackmail on all of her high profile and aristocratic clients gets taken out by a snake poison while traveling through the air.I choose to believe this means Death in the Clouds was the original inspiration for Snakes on a Plane.I like locked-room mysteries, so I absolutely appreciated the use of murder on a plane to spice up that trope. And I also love the snake poison dart as the weapon of choice.Keepin it wacky, Agatha! Now because Poirot is on the plane, he becomes a suspect in the court of public opinion and takes on the case to defend his good name. And of course, he solves it.This may not be the most well-known Poirot mystery, but it has an interesting setting, a good cast of characters, and a lot of twisty shenanigans to keep you interested. Recommended.

Hercule Poirot at his best. A gripping who dun it high in the air drama. The only case where Jury actually convicts Poirot of murder before their opinion is not upheld. For a change we see Poirot moving around looking for clues rather than solving the case from the comforts of his chair. Interesting

loved it. How he never let the killer suspect the game was known till the end.

4 Stars. Having read this years ago, I remembered the whodunit. Sort-of. I was not certain until near the end but it left me able to pounce on clues I surely missed the first time. A whole set of them can be found! "Clouds" is a good one but very complicated. It even has a Canadian connection! The book is from 1935 when flying between Paris and London was relatively new and exciting. Perceived as expensive and only for the rich. Hercule Poirot is on the airliner Prometheus which departs Le Bourget north of Paris bound for Croydon Airport south of London. Back then airplanes had names like ocean liners. The plane had two cabins and was likely a two-engine prop. Something extraordinary happens, but our private detective missed it all. He was asleep (are you suspicious?, I was) in seat #9 when the passenger in seat #2 behind him and to the right was poisoned by a dart thought to be shot from a blow-pipe. It was later revealed that the toxin was from a Boomslang snake from South Africa. Wild. It turns out that Madame Giselle was a money lender to the rich and famous - those desperate for privacy with secrets to hide. It was a hit. (April 2022)

A fine mystery featuring Hercule Poirot and a confounding murder on a plane in plain sight of the passengers including Poirot. But more importantly, just know that this Kindle Unlimited edition has a fair number of irritating transposed passages & word usage errors (see my Kindle Notes for some examples). Choose another edition and save yourself the bother.

An absolutely delightful "whodunnit"! I had forgotten how much I enjoy Agatha Christie! She was the first author I read after I started to move away from horse books. I remember having been to the mall and bought some Miss Marple Mysteries, one of the classmates I hung out with mentioned "oh, so somebody actually reads this stuff?" Right. Agatha Christie being outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare! No, J.K Rowling isn't quite in this distinguished league yet, but I expect she will be.In this particular book, a murder takes place on a plane journey, in the same compartment which the distinguished Monsiuer Poirot also travels. There is a wasp in the compartment and it is evident that this should have been seen as the cause of the money lender Giselle's demise. There is also a blow pipe and a thorn which dispensed the snake venom; so this is a very juicy case for the press. Monsieur Poirot must put all his little grey cell's to work to solve the riddle. In typical Agatha Christie style, I suspected absolutely everyone - except the culprit. I don't know how she manages this every time. I hear about the people so deft at her writing style they always know who the murderer is, but I am certainly not in this category. In more modern mysteries I can sometimes suss out the murderer by half-way through, but never Agatha Christie. She has an admirable sleight of hand. I should definitely put the rest of the works I haven't read by her on my reading list. I've read 15-20 books by her or so, but some when I was so young I hardly remember. What I do remember though, is how reliable she is. You always know what you get with Agatha Christie - something to tickle your little grey cells"
