Devil in Disguise Audiobook Summary

New York Times bestseller Lisa Kleypas returns with an enthralling and steaming romance between a Scot with a mysterious past and strong-willed lady looking for adventure–and love.

“The devil never tries to make people do the wrong thing by scaring them. He does it by tempting them.”

Lady Merritt Sterling, a strong-willed young widow who’s running her late husband’s shipping company, knows London society is dying to catch her in a scandal. So far, she’s been too smart to provide them with one. But then she meets Keir MacRae, a rough-and-rugged Scottish whisky distiller, and all her sensible plans vanish like smoke. They couldn’t be more different, but their attraction is powerful, raw and irresistible.

From the moment Keir MacRae arrives in London, he has two goals. One: don’t fall in love with the dazzling Lady Merritt Sterling. Two: avoid being killed.

So far, neither of those is going well.

Keir doesn’t know why someone wants him dead until fate reveals the secret of his mysterious past. His world is thrown into upheaval, and the only one he trusts is Merritt.

Their passion blazes with an intensity Merritt has never known before, making her long for the one thing she can’t have from Keir MacRae: forever. As danger draws closer, she’ll do whatever it takes to save the man she loves . . . even knowing he might be the devil in disguise.

I am dying over how wonderful this book was. It was everything I wanted and more from a Lisa Kleypas romance. I loved Merritt and Keir so much. The passion and love between them stole my heart. Devil in Disguise is now one of my new favorite Lisa Kleypas historicals!DiD is book 7 in the Ravenels series but I'm not sure why that is. You might be able to read it fine as a standalone but I would recommend reading the Wallflowers series first, because this book is the second generation of that series. Not a lot of Ravenels actually show up. Merritt, our widowed heroine, is Lillian and Marcus' oldest daughter and is in charge of her late husband's shipping company. Her newest business partner is Keir, our very first Scottish Lisa Kleypas hero. The connection between them is instantaneous and fantastic to read!Keir and Merritt killed me in the best of ways. I was swooning over their romance, which does happen quickly, but then a wrench is thrown in that slows things down and evens out the pacing. I adored how gone both of them were over each other. Keir is a total grumpy sweetheart and it was too easy to love him. There's a bit of suspense in this with someone going after Keir, so in between the romance, mystery, and family drama, there's never a dull moment in this read.If you loved Sebastian from Devil in Winter, I am happy to say you'll get to see a lot of him here! We even get a few chapters in his POV. I won't spoil anything, but I had no problem with the connection between Sebastian and Keir. Honestly, it was just a delight seeing the Wallflowers cast (well, half of them) again and I can only hope we get more second generation books in the future!Merritt and Keir are perfection together. There's a reason why Lisa Kleypas is so beloved and why she's my favorite historical romance author. I fall so hard for every one of her stories – and heroes – and cannot wait to read more!***GOODBYE WORLD. I'M READING AN ARC OF THE NEW LK.***UPDATE: the heroine is Merritt Sterling, Marcus & Lillian’s oldest!!! And I’m just gonna guess that the Scottish hero is somehow related to Sebastian 👀***GAAASSSSPPPPPPPPPP. A NEW LK!!!!Could it be about Marcus & Lillian's kids?? Something entirely new? Honestly it could be about anything and I will still be dying for it.

The beginning was really boring, the middle hooked me, and the end was nice. Not a bad book at all.It didn't (for me) have the strongest start. Our hero is the owner of a whiskey distillery and our heroine has inherited her shipping company from her (now dead) husband.Instantly, the two are attracted to each other and the sparks fly off the page. And I just didn't care at all about any of it.I haven't been 100% wowed by the Ravenels, so I wasn't actually surprised by my lack of excitement. And then something is revealed. Something that perhaps I should have guessed because of the title of the book. i really like lisa kleypas's writing but i find myself cringing when a certain name for anatomy is used during sex scenes. makes me shudder every time. i appreciate the scientific accuracy but it takes me out of the scene lol.overall this was a really sweet, pretty tame romance. i didn't enjoy it quite as much as chasing cassandra but i do think generally speaking that the romances in this series tend to improve in quality as it goes on. this is certainly a good romance for these uncertain times, it probably won't stress you out.

4 stars! There’s just nothing quite like a Lisa Kleypas novel. I’m glad the women has written so many books because I’ll be a little bit devasted once I’ve read them all. Devil in Disguise is the story of unconventional widow Merritt, who ran her husbands business after he passed away. In some dealings with the shipping business she meets a Scotsman named Keir who runs a whiskey business, and the sparks fly almost immediately. Both are attracted to each other but recognize nothing but scandal can come from their feelings. Yet when Keir’s life is threatened by assassins, Merritt finds herself mixed up in it too.I really enjoyed reading this book, there’s something so comforting about a historical romance by this author. I will say I stupidly did not realize it was in connection with the book Devil in Winter (I should have known from the titles) so I was confused on who some characters were at the beginning of the book. To my credit it’s been a minute since I read the Wallflowers series. I loved the story of the Scotsman and the widow, two people who shouldn’t be together and yet fall in love anyways. The first half of the book was really strong, and then the second half there were ome plot points that fell a bit flat for me. But this renewed my love of historicals so I think I’m going to binge a bunch right after this one.

✨Read for the series stayed for the brogue and brief 69✨**spoilers below**Okay I really loved this!! MJW’s Scottish brogue is just SO GOOD. I totally enjoyed seeing the older couples (autumn and winter) and how they interacted with their children. I also just find the fact that Merritt ended up with a mini Sebastian hilarious. I also forgot that Keir literally wore a beard because he was too handsome 💀 Did somebody say icon??? Legend???I may be a completely heartless wench but I’m so not sad Merritt spent like no time mourning her husband. Sure he was fine, but widow/widower plots can sometimes be very cyclical. Merritt was just horny for that brogue and I really respect that. Also the drama of Keir remembering at the eleventh hour that he and Merritt had got it on in a major way—impeccable. I had such a good time watching them fall in love. **Spoiler**I do wish the pregnancy at the end would’ve been handled differently than the “magical, virile sperm.” I was happy Merritt was able to have a child, but I think the foundation could’ve been built differently 🥺Overall, I hope this isn’t the last in the series!! I want to see what Daisy and Matthew are up to and who their children are. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶🌶🌶.5/5

*This review contains spoilers, so be warned before reading this review*Devil In Disguise is the newest installment in the Ravenels series and I will say that I was SO nervous for this book but I also kept my expectations lower on this one. When it comes to this series, it seems like the lower my expectation the better I tend to enjoy the read. I honestly never know what I will get with this series, since quite a few have been a hit or miss for me, but there was also a sense of eagerness with this one. And no I didn't receive the ARC on this one. This book actually is on the shelf of Barnes and Noble way early, so I recommend going out and grabbing it up. And after seeing some other romance readers I trust just cling in love to this book, I knew I had to read it and I honestly read this one in one sitting, it just drew me in so completely and loved the ride that Kleypas takes us on. Devil In Disguise starts off with our hero, Keir MacRae, who storms into the office of Merritt Sterling, who is a whiskey distiller, and has major issues with his shipment. Merritt is the type of woman that is the solver and calms tensions, having taking care of her siblings, she knows how to cool a hot temper but Keir is a man she hasn't ever been faced with. He has the Scottish blood that fire hot, but Merritt is drawn to Keir in a way that she has never experience, not even with her late husband. She wants to explore the chemistry between herself and Keir, but eyes are on her and her family just waiting for a scandal to happen. But when Keir's life is put in danger, Merritt is determined to stand by his side, no matter the rumor or scandal. But when Keir suffers and Merritt is put in a certain position, she will have to be crafty to make sure that she and Keir have their chance, but fate may have other plans for them, including reveals from Keir's past that could change their dynamic completely...Devil In Disguise is a story that truly packed a punch and there were some elements that I just wasn't expecting to happen at all. I was really excited for Merritt's book, but this book especially really ties the Ravenel series to the Wallflower series, and its all tied around Keir. Now I don't want to spoil too much, but lets just say that our delicious hero is the KEY to tying all the bonds together. I actually found Keir and Merrit's relationship to be sweet perfection. At first, you wonder, but honestly, their instant connection is breathtaking, and only Kleypas can write such sweet sexy chemistry you want more of. Normally instant connections such as these don't always work for me, but Kleypas really worked her magic in this book. From the beginning, you know that Keir and Merritt will have a battle, but their bond is strong enough to stand the tide ahead. And boy does Kleypas really throw some mountains in their journey. My heart just broke for these two, but most especially Merritt who is put in such a position but her strength and courage is truly admirable and she had my heart from beginning to end. She deserved to find her happy ever after, and even though she finds it, it will take perseverance on her part to find it. Keir was such a delightful hero, he definitely is the type of alpha hero that was so beautifully written. I loved his protectiveness of Merritt, his fighting for what he believed in, and his standing for his culture and background. He definitely has a spine and will fight for those he loves. I love how he is always watchful for Merritt, even in the most confusing moments of the plot. His attention and focus is solely on her and his character is steady and strong all the way through. And seeing his background come to light, and seeing his connection to the others was a journey I was all the way in for. This is a story I didn't know what to expect at all, but it's a romance that captivated me all the way through. Surprisingly I couldn't be this book down, and I was swept away by their beautiful story. Its a story that while it capture the sweet perfection of intimacy, also builds in its depths of secrets that become clear, shines truth into the darkness and stuns you into silence with its powerful emotion. I won't say that this is the best book this author has ever written, or that its the most perfect one, but it worked for me in every way. The only downside to this book is the lack of stepback ....yep SO SAD. I am not sure why Avon didn't include it in this one when they have done the whole series, and I was looking forward to it all YEAR. Overall I found Devil In Disguise to be a captivating read that stuns me in retrospect, a tale that offers depths of intimacy, secrecy revealed and connections unsuspected, a romance that is utterly enriching in his concepts, and a story you will cheer on from beginning to end.

6/5 stars! This was absolute and utter perfection. Merritt and Keir have a soul mate level epic romance. The way Keir loved Merritt was honestly one of the most beautiful portrayals of romance I have ever read about. This book transported me back into the Ravenel world and it felt like coming home to old friends. But seriously...the way Keir adored, cherished, and worshipped Merritt was unforgettable. I want to read it all over again to experience it one more time! This book also speaks to that understated quality Kleypas has of showing such strong female characters who are not in your face, obvious bluestocking agenda. She writes these heroines who are both soft and strong and perfect companions for the men in their lives. Seeing so many beloved members of the Wallflower and Ravenel series, the families and friendships, was also so wonderful. I loved every single page. This is a masterwork of historical romance.

the setup…It’s been three years since Lady Merritt Sterling was widowed when her husband Joshua was lost at sea. She took over management of his shipping company, assisted by her brother Luke Marsden. The company has thrived but now is threatened because of one very angry customer, Keir MacRae, a whisky distiller from Islay whose shipment has met with all sorts of challenges since arrival. When he’s brought to Merritt’s office, the angry Scotsman sparks something inside her she hasn’t felt for a long time. Once he’s calmed down, Keir takes note of the remarkable woman in front of him and the feeling is mutual. She’s a bit more high born for his sensibilities but that feeling is definitely not mutual. the heart of the story…It’s more Wallflower than Ravenel with this story, which is a really good thing! Merritt is the daughter of Lillian and Marcus Marsden, Lady and Lord Westcliff, as well as the best friend of Phoebe St. Vincent Ravenel. She’s bright, bossy and utterly delightful, which captivated Keir from the start. I loved their romance as it wasn’t bogged down by any silly angst or worry despite the very real obstacles they faced. It was also made clear early on that someone was out to harm him as two attempts were made on his life, the last one coming close to being successful. There were also questions and hints about his ancestry that kept me intrigued. But it was Merritt and Keir who kept me riveted to the story. the narration…I’ve enjoyed every single performance in this series but this was even more special. Her mastery of Keir’s Scottish accent just made him more authentic and appealing. And, her voice for Sebastian St. Vincent was so…him!the bottom line…I’ve loved this series and am sad to reach the end, even though this was a worthy conclusion. How fitting that it would feature the Wallflowers front and center, with a charming romance between two great characters. Merritt and Keir both had strong personalities and instead of butting like rams, they fit almost perfectly. Their banter was witty and fun, making this one of the best dialogues of the series. I’m glad I chose to listen to each of the stories as the narrator delivered outstanding performances for all. This was a nice mix of romance, humor, mystery and excitement. 4.5 starsPosted on Blue Mood Café

4.5 stars. Another lovely, romantic and very readable addition to the Ravenels series. It's about Merritt, daughter of one of the Wallflowers, and how she and Keir Macrae fall quickly and deeply in love. I liked Merritt, a strong, independent woman who very capably managed her husband's business after his death. I also liked Keir, the whisky distiller from Scotland's Isle of Islay. No kilts in sight, but his 'Scottishness' was very evident, and I enjoyed his brogue and his colourful Scottish vocabulary. I'm aware some readers are disappointed in Keir's background and identity, which involves characters from past Kleypas books, but I did not mind at all. In fact, I enjoyed this aspect of the book and found it quite believable. For me, Kleypas wrote this aspect very well. Having read all of the other books more than once, I feel as if I 'know' these characters, and this definitely added to my enjoyment of the book. There were lovely revisits with Lillian and Marcus (Merritt's parents), one of Merritt's brothers, and also Sebastian and Evie. Ethan and Garrett make an appearance too. We saw a bit more of Phoebe, and also her younger siblings, Ivo and Seraphina. I hope these two end up getting their own books one day, or their mysterious older brother Raphael. I'm totally up for that :)The plot is fairly straightforward, without too many twists and turns. I really enjoy these kinds of books that really focus on the romantic relationship between the leads. Ms Kleypas' style appeals to me and I find her books very readable and entertaining. While this is not a 'perfect' book, I had only very minor carps and overall I really enjoyed it. I know I will go back and reread it in the future too.

4.5☆☆☆☆☆This soothed my soul after so many bad reads.I have to say that the book was so beautiful. It will go on "My favorites" list. The Hero and Heroine were to my liking. And I have to agree that they both are such a power couple. The additional cameo from the previous books only made this one better. If I'll feel in the mood I'll write a more detailed review later. But hands down a wonderful read.💕💕💕👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕💕💕

TITLE: DEVIL IN DISGUISEAUTHOR: Lisa KleypasSERIES: The Ravenels #7RELEASE DATE: July 27, 2021GENRE: Historical RomanceRATING: 4 StarsCLIFFHANGER: NoExpectations are always high when you start a book by one of your top favorites. We measure and compare them to their best works which may be unfair because the standard is so much higher. And so a lower rating does not mean that they aren't as good. Because, honestly, if this had been my first book by Lisa Kleypas I may well have rated this 5 stars. This was in Lisa Kleypas standards very low angst. The hero and the heroine fall in insta-lust and not long after in love with one another. For some readers this may not work, I'm not complaining though. Merritt went with a rather analytical mind about her first marriage because she didn't want to get hurt. Her falling in love with a beautiful Scot was the exact opposite of it and to me it actually made sense. I loved her portrayal as a headstrong, independent woman of the era. An educated, noble business woman who is also kind and sweet beyond words but also a kickass shot. His pleasures were simple and straightforward. Lady Merritt, however, was neither of those things. She was an altogether different kind of pleasure. A luxury to be savored, and not by the likes of him. Keir never stood a chance when he fought the sizzling chemistry between them. He is gruff but sweet and the typical Lisa Kleypas hero with a golden heart and integrity. Being adopted with his real lineage in the dark he doesn't think that Merritt is for him to love. But that changes fast, as mentioned. I’ll be the extra rib that protects your heart. You can’t. You are my heart. The whole story long Keir's secret past puts him in grave danger. When it came to the showdown I found it a little anticlimactic. There is also the fact that Merritt can't conceive and we were deprived of what could have been a very sweet and emotional scene. That said, we get LOTS of Sebastian (from Devil in Winter) who is still one of my most beloved HR heroes of all times. With DEVIL IN DISGUISE Lisa Kleypas gives us a solid story in her Ravenels series that I enjoyed immensely, despite the niggles which has a lot to do with being reunited with the Wallflowers and there significant others. If you're on the fence and haven't read LK's Wallflowers series go back and do that. You'll love this one so much more. “Life can be understood only by looking back, but has to be lived forwardly.” - Søren Kierkegaard

On Kindle sale today 29th Nov 2021 for USD 2.99. Tropes: Mistaken Identity, Work Relationship, Forbidden Love, Opposites Attract, Unstarched (him), Amnesia37 highlights. Jesus! I guess I liked it???I quite adored the instant attraction. And the instant admittance of attraction. The book became more about what stood in their way. And it worked. Because LK knows what she is doing. At times too much sex (*gasp*! I know!) and at times it ventures too far off the romance. But another fairly ok delivery in this series. 3.5 - 3.75 stars*****- “How well do I suit your list?” he asked, his breath stirring the tiny wisps of hair at her nape. “Not at all, I’d wager.” Merritt set down the compress and turned to lean back against the washstand. “The list doesn’t suit you. A whisky distiller from a remote Scottish island was not what I had in mind.”***** - “… are you planning to hide behind my skirts while I confront the big, mean Scotsman?”“Absolutely,” he said without hesitation. “You like them big and mean.” Her brows lifted. “What in heaven’s name are you talking about?” “You love soothing difficult people. You’re the human equivalent of table syrup.” Amused, Merritt leaned her chin on her hand. “Show him in, then, and I’ll start pouring.”- Merritt wouldn’t have thought there was a man alive who could fluster her like this. She was a confident and worldly woman, after all. But she couldn’t ignore the flush rising from the high-buttoned neck of her dress. Or the way her heart had begun to pound like a clumsy burglar trampling the flower bed.- “You will no’ forbid your sister to go off alone with a stranger?” MacRae asked him incredulously. “She’s my older sister,” Luke said, “and she employs me, so . . . no, I’m not going to tell her a damned thing.” “How do you know I won’t insult her virtue?” the Scotsman demanded in outrage. Luke lifted his brows, looking mildly interested. “Are you going to?” “No. But I could!”- MacRae’s head tilted as he regarded her thoughtfully. “You dinna want to fall in love?” Merritt turned to wander around the flat. “I’ve never cared for the phrase ‘falling in love,’ as if love were a hole in the ground. It’s a choice, after all.” “Is it?” MacRae began to wander as well.- Her voice faded as he ignored the offering and kept coming toward her. Mildly alarmed, she leaned back to avoid contact with his wet body. Her breath caught as he gripped the edge of the sink on either side of her. “You,” he said flatly, “are a wee bully.” Merritt parted her lips to protest, but as she looked up at him, she saw amusement sparkling in his eyes.“I’m not a bully,” she told him, continuing to wipe his face and throat. A few more giggles burst out, making her clumsy. “I was being h-helpful.”“You like telling people what to do,” he accused softly, his gaze tracing over her features. “Not at all. Oh, I feel so misjudged.” But she was still laughing.- Her touch had spurred his breathing into a new, ragged rhythm. “Milady,” he said gruffly, “I’ll be relying on your common sense now. Because at the moment, I have none.”- She hadn’t realized it until now, but her awareness of squandered time had been growing during the past year, eroding her usual patience. So many rules had been invented to keep people apart and wall off every natural instinct. She was tired of them. She had started to resent all the invisible barriers between herself and what she wanted.- The more he came to know her, the stronger this yearning would grow, until any chance of happiness had slipped away like sand through his fingers. He’d spend the rest of his days consumed by desire for a woman who would always be as distant from his reach as the most far-flung star.- Every cell clamored for him to take her, mate with her. Instead, he bent his head and laid his cheek against her hair. They stood together as the dark night sang a million notes of rain. “At this moment,” he whispered, “I’m as happy as any man who ever lived.”Her voice was muffled in the folds of his borrowed shirt. “Then stay.”

Any book by Lisa Kleypas is a have-to-read for me, and this series is one of my top favorites from her. Merritt and Keir continued my love my LK’s brand of romance. The passion and fire between them was delicious and I liked them as individuals, for who they were on their own. If this series is going to continue with the grown children of my past favorites, I am so here for it! 🥰 That said, though I did enjoy this tremendously and there was much to love, this wasn’t a favorite. With all the good, there were some things that didn’t work so well for me. The good stuff first. Merritt and Keir were wonderful characters! Merritt was exactly what I would expect a daughter of Marcus and Lillian Marsden *from the Wallflowers* to be. Lovely and sweet but determined and not willing to be swayed from what she wanted by societal expectations. Keir was captivated by her but not willing *cough 😏* to sully her reputation by having her associated with himself, being only a rough Scots brewer 😍 and no where near her social standing. The romance itself was both passionate and full of swoon, nobody can mix those two so well as LK. The writing is always excellent, time and place clear and authentic and the pacing never dragged, until at the end a bit *but later for that*. The plot itself was unexpected, and I was interested all the way to the finish. As always, I love how past characters are a part of the new stories, and the family plays a strong part, which I also love. The things that didn’t work so well weren’t major but they were enough to pop my little escapism bubble. Mainly the complete insta-forever-love. I mean, I forgive that on the regular but this was literally first sight (view spoiler)[and they would never forget each other and after one night there would never be anyone else and I was just whut? 🤨 (hide spoiler)]. That’s fast even by my flexible standards. Still, it didn’t keep me from enjoying the story, right up til the end. Given the danger and tension throughout, the ending came out a little flat. Again, those were mostly minor things. Great characters, wonderful romance and a terrific story will keep me reading this series for as long as Lisa Kleypas will write it. 🥰

Do you like men with mysterious identities? Enjoy women who know what they want and aren't afraid to go after it? Are you looking for Wallflowers and Ravenels fanservice without feeling like you're missing out on a new couple's story? Then you'll definitely want to read Devil in Disguise. This is a wild ride of a novel, with a sexy Scotsman (he's so sexy he has to wear a beard otherwise the women pursue him too much. Not even kidding.), a mysterious assailant, a touch of amnesia, and of course a connection to the most famous Devil of them all, Sebastian Challon (former Lord St. Vincent). Kleypas doesn't leave out her signature historical details, this time providing us with tidbits about the whisky industry in Scotland, shipping companies, and plenty of mouthwatering food descriptions. But at its heart, this is a romance between two characters who can't keep their hands off of each other. We are docking half a point for that epilogue (if you know, you know), but the rest of the book was just pure, page-turning delight.7-Word Summaries:Meg: So sexy he can’t shave? Yes please.Laine: What makes a Scotsman? Whiskey, brogue, sex. This objective review is based on a complimentary advanced reader copy of the novel.
