Eve Audiobook Summary

The first book in Anna Carey’s chilling Eve trilogy, Eve is perfect for fans of The Handmaiden’s Tale.

After a deadly virus wiped out most of Earth’s population, the world is a terrifying place. Eighteen-year-old Eve has grown up isolated from the rest of the destroyed world in an all-girls school. But it isn’t until the night before her graduation that she discovers what her duties will be once she graduates.

To avoid the horrifying fate that awaits her, Eve flees the only home she’s ever known. On the run, she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Eve knows she shouldn’t trust him, but he slowly wins her confidence…and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

Eve is the first book in Anna Carey’s trilogy, full of romance, adventure, sacrifice, all set in a near future that is both wonderfully strange, and chillingly familiar.

For being a young adult book, I really enjoyed this story. Yes, there were times that I wanted to slug Eve for the stupid decisions she made but I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt because of how innocent and naive she was raised....but....come on....some things were just unforgivable. I got on this genre by spending my whole weekend watching The 100 episodes from the beginning and just had to read more stories like it.Am I going to read the next book in this series? I'm not sure yet...I did start it but Eve started getting on my nerves again and my heart broke in the very beginning with something that happened...so I'm putting it on hold for now.

This is a fast-paced young adult dystopian romance that has romance, suspense, and lots of heartbreak. I adored the storyline, even though parts of it felt familiar, as I’ve read a lot of dystopian YA books in my day. Some parts seemed specifically orchestrated to make me cry uncontrollably, but I can’t even be mad because it hurt so good. Some reviews are complaining about the plot holes, but I really don’t think you can say that the author not explaining the source of the pandemic, etc. in the first book of a trilogy in which one of the main themes is how the seemingly educated heroine has been lied to her whole life can really count as a plot hole. She’s discovering what the world is truly like for herself. The classic books that she was taught in school were all selected to skew her perception of the outside world and men in general. If these questions aren’t answered by the third book, I would say they’re major plot holes. But at this point? They’re just one more thing to compel me to continue reading the series! The only thing that I really did find annoying about the book and made me bump it down a star is the heroine. I understood that she’s arrogant and has her warped worldview at the beginning of the book, and I actually loved that, even if it made her a little unlikable. My issue is with how, while street smarts definitely don’t equate booksmarts, she’s really quite daft. She makes similar mistakes throughout the book. Some of them have devastating consequences. I honestly don’t know how she’ll be able to live with herself with the guilt of just how callous some of her choices were, and how they ruined the lives of people she cared about. Even her decision at the very end of the book, which leads to the massive cliffhanger, had me scratching my head. Has she learned nothing in this book? Spoiler under the spoiler tag. (view spoiler)[She goes to Califia with with Caleb, he’s gets injured and is on the brink of death. Then she finds out that men aren’t allowed in Califia. Caleb knew this, and he brought her here to keep her safe even if he can’t be safe with her (insert swooning here). He leaves, and… she lets him? He has literally fatal wounds. He won’t survive in the wilderness alone without her. She, once again, is valuing her own safety over those she claims to love. After what happened with Pip, I thought FOR SURE she’d sacrifice it all to save Caleb, someone she claims to love. But nope. So strange to me! (hide spoiler)]All in all, this book was unputdownable, and I can’t wait to read the others, and I hope that Eve starts to learn from her mistakes in the second installment! POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2022: This book fulfills the "A book with a palindromic title" category.

Had heard some not so encouraging things about this book, I was a bit doubtful if you start reading it but something told me I had to do it, first ... THAT COVER IS BEAUTIFUL !, and second THAT STORY that I found very original! So, I decided to read it ,went for the truth and I can not be happier than my decision ....The story as I said before is something I had never read before this apocalyptic world where democracy existed ,now fifteen years later is under the command of a king, a man who thinks that for some sick reason, it is a good idea hold adolescent girls constantly pregnant ... who are lured with promising ideas for future studies .... CRAZY !.Then the characters ...Eve, that is certainly the smartest girl in her high school and she is very excited about the graduation day until you discover the truth about what was happening when you leave there and decides escape ....To me I loved this character is me a little naive at first and in the finish too hahaha think it's a lovable character and I hope to grow in the following books.Caleb: It's a boy wrestler, handsome and super genuinely concerned for others I love it !!! and his relationship with Eve they has conquered me pure and real:) ... I died laughing every time Caleb says something who she do not understand, they are adorable! Arden: because you can never miss the best friend who kicks butt , to beginning I thought it would be a problem and I did not like but is a character which is very easy to love through the bookMarjorie & Otis: flag to true love: 3 just broke my heart. So nothing more to say than I have enjoyed reading this history and I have been flown the time on it, excited to continue :)

Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's Constant Raving Reviews MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE BOOK:I devoured this book in one day. I loved every second listening to it.CHARACTERS/DYNAMICS:The dynamics were phenomenal. Something I didn't like was how hung up Eve was to her best friend, Pip. I understand they were each other's only family (kinda), but it seemed like Pip had the only personality between the two, and Eve was just reminiscing. Besides that, their were several moments that could have turned Eve to have instalove with one of the boys, and I appreciate that Anna Carey wrote such an authentic teen boy's perspective.PLOT:Utterly original. I strongly recommend. I don't want to say much, as it may ruin the adventure. Just know that this complex world has been well thought out, and I can't wait to read further plot twists that will be involved. This book had many similarities to Peter Pan. There were the lost boys, Wendy, Peter, + Tink?THE ENDING:Shocking to see such selflessness, and it's a cliff hanger. Typical dystopian ending, really-- the whole "we've made it outside our dystopian world. What will happen next?" kind of thing. You get the gist. EVERYBODY; GO READ THIS BOOK. but also, only if you feel like it...

Overall I enjoyed reading this one, and I’m really interested to see how the rest of the trilogy plays out. Things that I liked. The characterization was great. Eve, though grated my nerves at times, was very well portrayed as were Arden and Caleb. Even the minor characters such as the boys from the dugout or the couple from the safe house were realistically portrayed and fleshed out characters. I love reading stories where the characters feel like real people. The characters in Eve are just that. I also liked the overall plot to the story. Here’s a world that has saw devastation from a plague, 98% of the population is wiped out, where do they go from here? I think Carey’s portrayal of the world was rather realistic. I don’t want to go into much about what these characters go through and what their world expects from them but it’s eerily realistic. I didn’t get the ending I wanted, but it was an exceptional ending! What didn’t work for me. Eve’s transition. She’s been brainwashed her entire life to believing certain things, and in a matter of days she’s gone from that discipled, naive school girl to a seasoned, brave conqueror. Some of the difficulties that Eve faces were a bit predictable at times as well. Readers who are looking for a introduction to the dystopian genre should pick this one up! You might like Eve if you like books by: Kimberly Derting, Bree Despain & Suzanne Young.

Eve by Anna Carey (Eve #1)Pages: 318Release Date: October 4th, 2011Date Read: 2011, December 18th-19thReceived: OwnRating: 4/5 starsRecommended to: 15+SUMMARY -The school protects. It keeps safe. The girls inside - they are no match for the terrors of men that lay beyond the walls. The girls are given fine educations and grow up well cared for.Ever, Valedictorian of the year, almost a graduate, discovers the terrifying truth. If all she knows is a life, then she must escape. Anything is better than what her future at the School holds. Can she survive the outside?MY THOUGHTS -I've wanted to read Eve for quite a long time. The cover, the synopsis - everything fascinated me. Now that I've read it, I'm bummed that the book didn't turn out to be a favorite, but I really did enjoy reading it. Anna Carey's writing is clear and precise, without the unneeded fluff, and also really enjoyable. I found the story thought-provoking and I definitely want more.CHARACTER NOTES -I've heard a lot of, "Eve is so stupid! I can't believe she did all that and never learned!" I've even heard a few "I HATE EVE" statements. If that was your opinion, that's fine. But I highly disagree. Not only did I think Eve was a strong character who I totally felt a connection with, but she is not stupid. She's naive - there's a difference. She's been locked up in a school and lied to her whole life. She's been protected and sheltered in extreme ways, so she doesn't know much about the way the outside world works. Her mistakes all helped her learn and grow. And her decision at the end - I can't hate her for that. Yeah, maybe a good number of us would have chosen differently, but I felt it wasn't terrible beyond belief and will definitely have a good affect on the story. So, in the end, I loved Eve and look forward to more time with her in Once.Caleb - he was great. I really enjoyed who he was and the change he wrought in Eve. Their romance started in friendship and blossomed very sweetly - and realistically. He made me grin often throughout the book. The other characters all had their own independent impacts on the story, which was nice and refreshing. I hope to see some of them again in Once!STORY NOTES -This book is intense. It takes place after a Plague - after mayhem and chaos and death - and the world outside is scary. The world inside is scary, too, but shhhh!!! No one knows!I got chills more than one time. How terrifying it would be to live in a world like that! However, as much as I enjoyed this aspect of Eve, it reminded me a lot of Enclave by Ann Agguire. Did anyone else see this as well? Maybe not in character, but in setting and some aspects of the story, they were strangely alike. In any case, I liked what Carey did with a story in the wilds - now I can't wait to see what she has in store for the city...and for the plot! That whole twist with the King, and at the end with her decision and how it affected Caleb, and the School?!SUMMING IT UP -Bright. For some reason, I cannot get that word from my head in relation to Eve. The characters shine, the story catches attention, and the writing is clear. I really enjoyed myself - looking forward to more! For the Parents -I would recommend to 15+. Very intense (sometimes dark) themes, and intense scenes of survival. There's also an attempted rape, and lots of talk about men being monsters who merely use women. A few kisses, not described much, very innocent romance.

Actual Rating: 3.5*I really liked this one. I thought some things moved too quickly and I felt like there were some overdone tropes and cliches but they kinda worked? I am excited to see what is next in the story!I really liked the look at forced repopulation and pregnancy in this one but I would have liked MORE time spent on it. I felt like we just got a glimpse of it in this one and it wasn't enough to satisfy my curiosity. I felt like there should have been more at the beginning about it before Eve left the School. Like maybe she learned that she was supposed to (view spoiler)[be the breeder for the King and that is why the Teacher helped her leave or something (hide spoiler)] just to bring it all together for me.I liked her relationship with Caleb and I also liked that while she realized some of the things that she was taught were untrue, that some of the things said about men being horrible were true. I think it was an interesting mix to see how the boys and the girls were treated so differently and yet both saw horrors. I was iffy about how Caleb was like "yeah I know the Schools suck but WE WERE IN LABOUR CAMPS AND HAD IT HARD TOO" because I felt like he was trying to one-up Eve. However, I thought that it ended up not being like that and it balanced itself out fairly nicely.I thought part of the middle section was awkward and when the girls are (view spoiler)[captured because of Leif's betrayal and taken away (hide spoiler)] that the story kinda lost it's focus to me. I felt like this was done just to split everyone up so that there could be sequels. But I am also looking forward to seeing what happens in the rest of the series! I think it ended on a high note and a really interesting one and I look forward to seeing what happens to Eve next!Books and Ladders | Queen of the Bookshelves | Books Are My Fandom | Twitter | Instagram | Bloglovin'

The thing that I liked most about this book is how realistic everything was, especially the reactions of the main character. I loved to see her change and grow and reflect on her life and her future. The book is a bit on the slower side and is definitely character driven but if you don't mind that I highly recommend it to any fan of ya dystiopan! Can't wait to read the next book in this series!
