Hold Me in Contempt Audiobook Summary

Move over 50 Shades, there’s a new romance in town. Superstar Wendy Williams brings on the heat in her first ever, no-holds-barred, down and dirty, romance novel.

Kimberly Kind is trying to get beyond her roots. A successful, beautiful, smart lawyer, she’s finally finding direction in her life and getting out of the streets. But a terrible accident threatens to throw her carefully laid plans off course. Now Kim’s hiding a huge secret… one that could threaten everything.

Enter King. A perfect mix of Justin Timberlake and David Beckham, the man oozes sex and has more swagger than anyone Kim’s ever met. Their chemistry is off the charts. But after passion-filled nights, the intensity of their emotions takes both of them by surprise.

Love was not supposed to be an option. Now it’s the only thing holding them together. When their pasts come back with a vengeance, can love possibly be enough?

3.5 StarsFrom reading the blurb for this title, I was expecting a steamy romance: what I got was an edgier story: more urban and street than romance and sexy. You have to be aware of that before picking up this title, the story does not unfold simply or gently, and the characters are often more dressing for action and ‘name dropping’ of cultural references than developed with a clear sense of purpose. Told in the first person point of view, Kimberly alternates between sober and out of control, sweet and hateful, and often utterly incapable or unwilling to take account for her part in anything. Giving me a reason to continue on with the story was the fact that I could dislike, roll my eyes and even want to shake her throughout the book: when the walls start to crack and the reasons behind her many issues start to come forward, her behavior becomes more understood, although still not acceptable. “King”, is her dalliance: not quite love interest as she isn’t capable of love, but sexy enough to bring a yum to your brain as he swaggers in and provides her some escape and security. There is more to his reluctance to engage himself wholly with her: his own issues and the added element of some burned bridges that Kimberly didn’t realize she had torched kept the potential for a ‘quiet romantic plot’ completely out of reach. They had some sizzling moments – but her calculation and lack of self-awareness didn’t add to their chemistry. Overall, the story was ambitious, although never quite hitting the mark of a romance as most readers would expect. There isn’t a true sense of love, although by the end of the story you have characters to wish well, if not necessarily seeing them on a path to a happily ever after. My final impression is that the author took on a few too many references and twists to the plot that were not integrated smoothly, which made for a read that disconnected me from the characters as well as the action. While I didn’t find issues with the frequent (perhaps all too frequent) ‘name dropping’ of the cultural references, they could be confusing or off-putting to readers not expecting the more urban flavor to the story. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review with Tasty Book Tours. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

ARC Provided via tourBookswagger Marcia: Four Crowns, good read, on the way to swagger. Hold Me in Contempt was an interesting read, more cultural headlines and taboo subjects were dropped in this one book alone than any fiction multicultural book I have read this year. She knows the culture for sure. Some things you have to live or be around to know, the things that are brought up talking with friends like your cousin being a five percenter (aka in the five percent nation) for example where descriptions that kept me in the story. This is not a romance book, meaning I do not think this one will appeal to romance readers. Kimberly Kind is a mix of something sweet and hateful, she has layers. Layers that her drinking has not allowed her to see, you really do not get a sense of who she is until you see her letting her guard down with King her love interest in the title. I say love interest because he is not truly a hero in the sense romance readers recognize as heroes.I caution lovers of the romance genre to not pick up this title expecting a romance read, this is not that book. Instead we have another entry, a good one mind you in the urban fiction-street lit genre. Lovers of the urban street lit genre will enjoy this non perfect heroine who finally recognizes her faults and makes the changes to resolve her issues. Her love interest Rig “King” McDonnell brings in the sexy. He is street smart, has impressive swag and although he has issues of his own (ohhh I wish I could tell you, let’s just say he knows the struggle but a punk he is not) provides the perfect set of arms to hold her while she is trying to figure out who the real bad guy is. Turns out the story has a bit of a suspenseful plot due to some of the bridges the heroine did not know she had burned.Straight to the Swagger: Pick this one up if you like urban street fiction and sexy Irish descendants with street swagger because King has all that. A heroine you wouldn't want to be but would love to read about. I hope there will be a second book because I would like to know what happens to Kimberly and King. I thought I was reading a romance and expected a HEA or HFN which I did not get. I got a big ol fat Mob style cliff hanger. If I were rating this as a romance it would not have been a four crown read. But hey I have read this genre enough to recognize it when I see it.

A good read. Predictable yet entertaining. There were definitely some corny moments that had me rolling my eyes but all in all it was a good quick read. For all of you that love romance novels you probably will be disappointed. I consider romance a subgenre in this book. My favorite character was King. I haven't fell in love with a fictional character like I did King since Midnight in the coldest winter ever. This was a solid four star.

The Book Chick

I considered 3.5 but after thinking it over it was a four. As a reader you have to ask yourself what matters to you. I like to be entertained. I want to escape. I want to root for the main character. I want to learn something new. I want to see the character(s) evolve. This book did a lot of that. There was also some major things that hindered a 5 star rating but I rarely give those anyway. It was the story. I loved the story. I have to admit I am a character freak. I think that a great character can hold together the worst story. But here, Kim had a great story. She was hurt and that hurt caused her to progressively destroy herself. I loved that she couldn't admit that she had a problem because that is what drove this entire story. She was reckless. Her judgement was pot at best. She was an addict. She was judgmental. She needed to be loved and she found it in the wrong place but since everything else in her life was wrong why not? I loved that she fell for King albeit in what three days? Ha! Impossible? Maybe but it's fiction and the writer made me believe it. Now the bad. The timeline was messed up. There were some questionable things that happened that were never quite clear and that could be because there may be a sequel but it was a bit messy. I think King could've been a stronger character. It's like I liked him because she liked him not because I actually liked him. He wasn't developed enough. It was like I almost fell in love and how do you do that right? The ending was meh. I mean it seems like a sequel is coming but who knows. It wasn't strong enough and it left me with questions like why would King go to Belize when they already had information that he had dealings there. Why is Kim ok with going there knowing that the DA's office knows his potential whereabouts. And that's just a few of my questions. So yes this was messy but it was a beautiful mess.

Kimberly Kind is now a smart, successful lawyer who has tried her best to move on from how she grew up and an ex boyfriend. Wile she thinks she has everything going good and is on the right track she is still haunted by her past ans still has problems from an accident. She is trying to hold things together when she meets King. He is unlike any man sh has every been with. They both have secrets and while they seem great for each other they may have trouble come knocking at their doors. Everyone says they shouldn't be together but they seem to love each other even being on opposite sides. Kimberly at first seems like someone who has it all together. She still deals with what she calls her ghetto family and tries to help out when she thinks she can. The more you read about her and find out you see she has many personal demons that even she doesn't know. I liked her as she is not a perfect character and seemed very real. She does things she never thought she would. King I have to say I did like right away even when he seemed kinda shady. He still treated Kimberly great and did everything he could for her. He is willing to do anything for her no matter what it may cost him. This is a book you really can't out down because you just have to see what happens next. I loved finding out more about Kimberly and seeing more of her past. Like her you don't see some of the stuff coming and the author is great at slowly revealing things till it all comes out. There is danger and several steamy scenes. It has the perfect combination of everything that makes it a joy to read. I really hope there is a second one as I want more of Kimberly and King. They are really good together even if other people in the book don't think so. The plot and whole story are great and I never had a dull moment reading it. I would recommend to anyone.

We start our reviews off with a book that truly surprised me. I had no idea what to expect upon reading Wendy Williams’ (WW) Hold Me in Contempt. I’m not going to lie; it was definitely a rocky start for me, but it didn’t take long for me to get immersed in the story. It also helped that WW (on her show) likened her character, King, to Joe Manganiello. Yummmm! I’m so glad I kept on reading!Kimberly Kind is a hot mess. She comes from a troubled childhood, but despite her challenges, she rose above it all and became a lawyer. Her twin brother wasn’t as lucky, but he’s still keeping his head up. So what’s got Kimberly all sorts of twisted? She’s still reeling from a broken relationship she just can’t get over and an accident that has her relying on pain medications just to get through her days.Every bad decision she’s made in her life (and recently there have been several) traces back to her past relationship and we get glimpses of why she’s spiraling out of control. Speaking of bad decisions, sleeping with her boss, who’s married, isn’t helping her at all. Just when things seem to reach rock bottom, she meets King.King is a unlike any man Kimberly’s ever met before. But things aren’t perfect in paradise. King is tied to a case Kimberly’s office is investigating and though Kimberly tries to get a grip on things, it’s soon clear she’s way in over her head.Hold Me in Contempt was a great, suspenseful read I hope there’s a sequel to. *le pant* Just loved it.Hold Me in Contempt features: erotica oral sex ménage themes drug themes mafia themes suspense interracial abuse cheating alpha male angsthttp://readourlipsblog.blogspot.com/2...

This book was really good. I love IR romances and this is Wendy's first IR romance. This book had a lot of laughter, wit and moments where you can relate to the character. King was a great description of an character, but could of had more development, she met him late in the book and we seen him only a hand full of times after that. The ending could of been different. I wanted the ending to be more action, more insight. The way it ended you don't know if it will be a number two, because Kim left everything behind to go off with King, I understood she choose love over her job but at the end of the day she took an oath to prosecute those who prey on the vulnerable, that's we're I come in with the ending could of been different because she could of wrote it where Paul crazy ass could of been taking down and the Irish mob. The character problems also did not come up as one problem as the book went on we got to see what her problems were. It left you guessing what her problems were. I found myself relating to the character at moments because I crew up with a parent who was on drugs. Her friends were funny as hell they made me laugh because that's how I speak to my girls. Hopefully Wendy writes a sequel to this book because I enjoyed reading it.

Kimberly Kind is a successful, beautiful, smart lawyer trying to make her way in life and rise above her roots. However, an accident throws everything up in the air. Kim hides the secret even from herself. Kim also grows dependent on pills that stop the pain that she feels every morning and uses alcohol at night to dull the pain. King is a hot and sexy man. Kimberly is drawn to King immediately. King is not a “nice” man but he is perfect for Kimberly. The chemistry between King and Kimberly is blistering. I respect King because he lets Kimberly figure things out herself without pushing. I found this book well written with interesting and realistic characters. This author was very detailed and did not gloss much no matter how difficult the situation got. The ending leaves you hanging so I do wonder if there will be a sequel. Overall, this was an interesting read. This book is not your traditional romance novel

An Engaging, Compelling and Page-turning NarrativeIf you enjoy watching the Wendy Williams Show then you will certainly get pleasure reading this romantic story. The protagonist, Kimberly Kind, a successful Assistant District Attorney, can’t seem to get her personal and love life in check after her ex-fiancé, Ronald McDonald, dumps her for her roommate, but Kimberly’s life begins to take a turn when she meets a mystery man called King. What I liked about the book was its complex, multi-cultural characters that readers can relate to, and shocking depictions of manipulation, sex, lust, eroticism, treachery, jealousy and murder. But the story begins to take a different course, with some humorous activities, which will lead to a shocking and explosive ending. Is a sequel coming?

Wendy why was this book so good?An engagingly gripping plot line about a powerful women meets powerful man. I loved everything about this story, specially the characters. They had real life new york qualities i felt like i was really engaged in a conversation with them throughout the story. The plot period was a great twist. Even the decision making our main character had to make in the story was phenomenal! I LOVED MY FIRST EVER WENDY READ! 5 HUGE Stars!!!!!!

It was actually an okay book. A ton of potential. It seemed long and took a while for the story to get "juicy". It could have went into a little more detail with each character and their personal struggles, as opposed to detailing the main characters job and work. Overall, I'd read another Wendy Williams book.

I like Wendy, even tho she can be very very catty. I still tune in and enjoy her company and her show. I enjoyed the characters, felt the plot moved on well and felt that the ending had the right bang and tied the story up nicely. Worth reading if you like Wendy, worth reading if you want a light summertime book. Totally work the time.

I thought her book was great. I never listen to the reviews since I've already read Ms Williams' previous stories and the pages just kept on turning until I finish reading the last word. Obviously there's gotta be a Part 2 in the near future.

I received an ARC of this book. I'm really glad I stuck with this book. I enjoyed this book more than I ever thought I would. The ending left me wanting more. However, I do not get the comparison between this book and Fifty Shades of Grey.
