N or M? Audiobook Summary

Set during the dark days of World War II, Agatha Christie’s N or M? puts two most unlikely espionage agents, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, on the trail of a pair of Nazi spies who have murdered Britain’s top agent.

World War II is raging, and while the RAF struggles to keep the Luftwaffe at bay, Britain faces a sinister threat from “the enemy within”–Nazis posing as ordinary citizens.

With pressure mounting, the intelligence service appoints two improbable spies, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. Their mission: to seek out a man and a woman from among the colorful guests at Sans Souci, a seaside hotel. But this assignment is far from an easy stroll along the promenade–N and M have just murdered Britain’s finest agent and no one can be trusted.

N or M? (Tommy & Tuppence #3), Agatha ChristieN or M? is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie first published in 1941. After the outbreak of the Second World War and many years after they worked for British intelligence, middle aged Tommy and Tuppence Beresford feel useless and sidelined. Then Tommy is approached by a secret agent named Grant to go undercover once more. Grant tries to find German spies and fifth columnists but is hampered by traitors within British intelligence who follow and sabotage his work. Since Tommy has not been in the field for many years, nobody knows him and he can investigate unofficially. ...

Best couple in the Christieverse. At least 50% of the time, I'm disappointed with the way Agatha wrote couples. The worst offenders for me were a woman who happily gave up her successful business to be married, and a woman who felt her heart flutter with love when her man proved how much he cared by trying to strangle her. However, in N or M Christie nailed it.Tommy's respect for Tuppence is pretty amazing in that he doesn't expect her to sit at home docilely, and he's quite proud to have her working with him. And Tuppence is so sure of herself and secure in who she and Tommy are together that she doesn't do some of the silly things you see women in older books do.

To be honest, this book didn't feel so good at the very beginning. But, as the things went ahead, I kept on guessing. Even with obvious fact my belief dangled, and I couldn't be sure of the decisions I made about the antagonist. And by the end I truly loved this story. Its everything you want from a Christie story. There is misdirection, suspense and proper explanation of the facts.Normally I try to be critical about mystery novels, but I have absolutely no complain about this one. So, a full rating is well deserving achievement.

I had a somewhat rocky start with T&T in THE SECRET ADVERSARY, but I was delighted to get on much better with them in this book. This book walks an interesting line between being a Christie thriller with definite Christie whodunnit vibes, and that balance really worked for me. I also think the fact that this is pretty short for a novel worked in its favor-- it didn't get bogged down in too much spy nonsense/hand-waveium, which I think was smart. Overall, a fascinating look into Christie's mindset in the middle of WWII

Not the typical Christie murder mystery, but instead, a World War II espionage thriller featuring the husband and wife team of Tommy and Tuppence.Don't worry, there are still plenty of red herrings to throw you off the scent.

This novel sees the detective duo of Tommy and Tuppence in the midst of World War-2. N and M are the initials given to two of Hitler's agents whom Tommy and Tuppence hunt for. A character in the novel Major Bletchley is a former Indian army officer who claims to know the secrets of Britain's wartime efforts. During World War-2, the code breakers at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire under Dilly Knox had broken German Enigma machine cyphers giving British military to Germany’s secret plans. Knox was a friend of Agatha Christie and MI5 was anxious to know how much Christie really knew about the Bletchley park operations. Knox invited her to his home and over tea asked her why she had named the Indian army major Bletchley. Christie said that once on her way from Oxford to London her train had been stuck for a long time at Bletchley and she took her revenge by naming the character Bletchley!

Tommy and Tuppence did not disappoint in this book.Still the bright young things (but slightly aged) solving a mystery together.Witty, quick paced and filled with wonderful Red Herrings, just goes to show what dangers lurk by the Seaside

Another excellent Christie read. First and foremost, this one reaffirmed my love for Tuppence; she really is a fantastic character. It's great that Christie has allowed us to see the progression of her and Tommy over time; the duo having grown from ambitious youngsters to middle-aged retirees with their own grown-up children. This in turn allowed for a great thread throughout this book about society being dismissive of people and their worth as they age.The plot itself was as intricate and deftly handled as I've come to expect, with elements of political intrigue, war-time racial tension, action and excitement, and even some surprising pathos; topped off, of course, with a heavy dose of mystery. It was as clever and readable as ever, with Christie once again catching me off guard with the well-placed twists, and providing an incredibly satisfying conclusion that made this a perfect case of cosy crime.

World War II Britain. Tommy and Tuppence Beresford are feeling rather old and unappreciated. They were in the thick of things in the last war--Tommy in the service and Tuppence as a nurse and driver for a General. After the war was over they had so many thrilling adventures working undercover for "Mr. Carter" of Intelligence. But now...they're told that the war office and intelligence can't use them. Obviously, it's a much younger man's...and woman's...show now.But then "Mr. Grant" shows up, ostensibly with a rather dull, but important job shuffling papers in Scotland for Tommy alone. But it's merely a cover for him to go searching for fifth columnists at the Sans Souci, a seaside hotel. One of two top German agents, going by the code name "N" or "M,"is thought to be in the area as well, directing the British traitors. Nothing is known about N and M except that one is a man and one is a woman. Tommy puts up a mild protest--too long out of the game, but Grant tells him that's exactly what is needed. Someone that nobody knows and nobody will suspect is an agent. And he's to be sworn to secrecy-he can't even let Tuppence know what's up.When Tommy tells Tuppence about the cover job, she is suitably upset that there's nothing in it for her and sees him off at the station on the train like a dutiful wife. Imagine his surprise when he arrives at the southern coastal town of Leahampton (by way of Aberdeen for verisimilitude) to find "Mrs. Blenkensop" well established and peering back at him with Tuppence's eyes. She managed to fake leaving the flat while Mr. Grant was talking with Tommy and overheard the whole plan. And Tuppence was determined to be in on the action. From then on "Mr. Meadowes" and "Mrs. Blenkensop" are hot on the trail of the fifth columnists--but when Tommy disappears and Tuppence is taken captive it looks like the game is up. But as Mr. Grant now knows...you should never underestimate Mrs. Beresford. It was great fun to see Tommy and Tuppence back in action again. They may be a bit older, but they've still got what it takes to outwit those devious spies--especially Tuppence. She is quick-witted enough to see through a certain person's pose and lays an artful trap which s/he falls right into. It was especially amusing to watch their children think about them as "poor little dears--having such a dull time of it and wanting so much to be where the action is." Little do they know what their parents have been up to. Dame Agatha gives us plenty of possible Ns or Ms--from the inn's proprietor Mrs. Perenna, who is not as Spanish as she seems to the hearty old warhorses Major Bletchley and Commander Haydock to Carl von Deinim the German refugee to the sharp-eyed Mrs. O'Roarke to Miss Minton who seems to think of nothing but knitting to the distracted Mrs. Sprot who has her hands full with her young daughter to the hypochondriac couple Mr. & Mrs. Cayley. They all seem to be exactly what they are...except maybe just a touch too much so. But surely they can't all be imposters? ★★★ and 1/2 (rounded up here)First posted on my blog My Reader's Block.
