The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories Audiobook Summary

Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories is a collection of eleven tantalizing tales of murder and other criminal pursuits–including the classic title story, the basis for the 1957 Oscar-nominated Billy Wilder film starring Marlene Dietrich, Tyrone Power, and Charles Laughton.

A murder trial takes a diabolical turn when the wife of the accused takes the stand. . . . A woman’s sixth sense–and a loaded revolver–signal premonitions of doom. . . . A stranded motorist seeks refuge in a remote mansion and is greeted with a dire warning. . . . Detective Hercule Poirot faces his greatest challenge when his services are enlisted–by the victim–in a bizarre locked-room murder.

From the stunning title story (which inspired the classic film thriller) to the rarest gems in detective fiction, these eleven tales of baffling crime and brilliant deduction showcase Agatha Christie at her dazzling best.

"The Witness for the Prosecution" alone deserves a thousand stars. Absolutely brilliant, one of the best short stories I've ever read, of any genre. I also loved "The Fourth Man", a little atypical and utterly creepy as it is, and "Philomel Cottage," which made me happy with its references to the Bluebeard legend and One Thousand and One Nights. But also "Wireless" and "The Red Signal"... in short, I just found two or three stories just below average (Christie's average, which is not the same as that of the rest of the world) but the collection, in general, is stellar. And I said, the title story is a little masterpiece.

““The Witness for the Prosecution and other stories” is a collection of 11 short stories, each published between 1924 and 1932.It is a brilliant collection. I do recommend the audiobook narrated by Hugh Fraser and Christopher Lee. It was a pleasure reading the book while listening to the actor’s impersonation. Here is a list of the stories included in this book with the dates of each release:“The Witness for the Prosecution” was first published in the USA as “Traitor Hands” in Flynn’s Weekly, 31 January 1925. - This is a brilliant story! It was adapted for the screen, in 1957 and the movie received 6 nods for the Oscar (not a winner). It was also adapted for the TV in 2016, as a mini series, but a version extremely dramatic and very different from the book, but still quite entertaining.“The Red Signal” was first published in Grand Magazine, June 1924.“The Fourth Man” was first published in Pearson’s Magazine, December 1925.“S.O.S.” was first published in Grand Magazine, February 1926.“Wireless” was first published in the Sunday Chronicle Annual 1925, September 1925.“The Mystery of the Blue Jar” was first published in Grand Magazine, July 1924.“Sing a Song of Sixpence” was first published in Holly Leaves (published by Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News), 2 December 1929.“Mr. Eastwood’s Adventure” was first published as “The Mystery of the Second Cucumber” in The Novel Magazine, August 1924. It also appeared later as “The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl.”“Philomel Cottage” was first published in Grand Magazine, November 1924.“Accident” was first published as “The Uncrossed Path” in The Sunday Dispatch, 22 September 1929.“The Second Gong” (a story with Hercule Poirot) was first published in the USA in Ladies’ Home Journal, June 1932, and then in Strand Magazine, July 1932. It was later expanded into “Dead Man’s Mirror” for the book Murder in the Mews (Collins, March 1937). This was a re-read for me, but first time in English. I read it during my early teens, a version translated into Portuguese.I confess that I did not remember any of the stories, so I was very pleased.

The title story is one of Dame Agatha's best - the twist at the end is absolutely breathtaking. In the famous play based on this story, she added another twist so that she would not have to deceive the viewers about the characters: read the story first, then read or watch the play. You will understand and salute her mastery."Philomel Cottage" was one story I really loved - I wonder why Hitchcock did not make a movie out of it! It's a masterpiece in suspense. "Accident" is also a chilling vignette."Wireless" is a classic black comedy, where the villain gets his comeuppance in a really humorous way (and no, that's not a spoiler!). "The Mystery of the Blue Jar" and "Mr. Eastwood's Adventure" are tales cast in the same mould. The astute reader will guess the mystery easily, but enjoyable all the same.I don't remember much of the others. There were a couple with a touch of the supernatural which I didn't particularly enjoy.

A group of short stories, copyrighted by the Queen of Mystery between 1924 & 1948. The title story is a classic and the rest are very good. If you like short stories and mysteries you will enjoy these.

This collection gathers 11 short stories by Agatha Christie. The collection was first published only in the US in 1948. The stories are: The Witness for the ProsecutionThe Red SignalThe Fourth ManS.O.SWhere There's a WillThe Mystery of the Blue JarSing a Song of SixpenceThe Mystery of the Spanish ShawlPhilomel CottageAccidentThe Second GongThe Witness for the Prosecution - One of Agatha Christie's most famous short stories. It has been adapted to a stage play, radio dramas, a film and multiple television adaptations. The ending of the short story and the play (also written by Christie) are different as she was dissatisfied with the original ending. First published in January 1925 in Flynn's Weekly under the title "Traitor Hands,'' this story was also published in The Hound of Death (1933, UK), The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories (1948, US) and Mousetrap and Other Plays (1993). BBC4 Radio "modernized'' the story. This version is available in Agatha Christie: Twelve Radio Mysteries. The Red Signal - A medium gives a warning at a dinner party which comes true in dreadful ways. First published in the UK in The Grand Magazine in 1924 and included in Hound of Death in 1933 (UK). It was not published in the United States until 1948 when it appeared in The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories. The story was adapted for The Agatha Christie Hour (television) in 1982. The Fourth Man - A group riding on a train discusses a case of multiple personalities. This story was first published in The Grand Magazine in 1925 and later in The Hound of Death (1933. UK). It was adapted for television in 1982 (The Agatha Christie Hour, episode 4). S.O.S - A man gets stranded in the middle of nowhere and encounters a family at a secluded house with strange results. First published in The Hound of Death in 1933 (UK). I found no adaptations for this story. Where There's a Will - A woman hears the voice of her deceased husband over the radio for several days. The effects are disastrous...for more than one person. First published as Wireless in The Hound of Death (1933. UK). I found no adaptations of this story for radio or television. The Mystery of the Blue Jar - Jack Hartington is dragged into a strange mystery after hearing a haunting cry of "Murder! Help! Murder!'' coming from a nearby cottage. This story was first published in 1933 in The Hound of Death (UK). I found no radio adaptations of this story, but it was used in an episode of The Agatha Christie Hour (episode 7, 1982). Sing a Song of Sixpence - This story was first published in 1929 in Holly Leaves, the annual Christmas special of Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News. It was later included in The Listerdale Mystery (1934, UK). It was first published in the US in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in 1947. I didn't find any radio or television adaptations of this story. The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl - This story was first published as The Mystery of the Second Cucumber in The Novel Magazine, 1924. It was later included in The Listerdale Mystery (1933) story collection with the title Mr. Eastwood's Adventure. This collection changed the title yet again to The Mystery of the Spanish Shawl. I found no adaptations of this story. Philomel Cottage - An heiress marries in haste, and comes to wonder how well she really knows her husband. Is he plotting? First published in The Grand Magazine in 1924. It was later included in The Listerdale Mystery story collection in 1934 (UK) and The Witness for the Prosecution and Other Stories in 1948 (US). It was adapted for radio 3 times for the OTR show Suspense (1924. 1943 and 1946), and once by BBC4 Radio in 2002 (modernized version). It has also been adapted for the stage (1936, titled Love from a Stranger), television (Fireside Theatre, 1950) and film (1947 in the US, titled A Stranger Walked In). The stage play (titled Love from a Stranger) was adapted for film and television four times (1938, 1947 and 1958 and once for West German television in 1957) It is one of Christie's most adapted short stories. Accident - A man suspects a wife may be plotting to poison her husband. This story was first published in 1929 in the Sunday Dispatch under the title, The Uncrossed Path. It was included in The Listerdale Mystery story collection (UK, 1934). In March 1943, Accident was published in Ellery Queen Magazine in the US. It was adapted once into a stage play titled Tea for Three in 1939. The Second Gong - A wealthy man who demands his guests never be late to dinner is suddenly....late to dinner. Definitely a case for Hercule Poirot! This story was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1932 and in Ladies Home Journal that same year. It is the basis for a novella (Dead Man's Mirror) published in 1937. It was included in the story collection The Problem at Pollensa Bay and Other Stories (UK) in 1991. This original version of the story has not been adapted, but Dead Man's Mirror was crafted into an episode of Agatha Christie's Poirot (Season 5, episode 7)Lovely collection of short stories! I am enjoying my journey through Agatha Christie's writing in publication order (with a few backtracks when I miss something....lots of jumping around and re-publication of earlier stories, etc) Nice mix of plots...just a fun, entertaining read. There was not a single story that I did not like! Still working my way through short stories....then back to novels! :)

Nice set of short mysteries by the Mistress of Mysteries, Agatha Christie. The narration was great, especially the ones done by the indomitable Christopher Lee (yes, that Christopher Lee). For the most part I was not able to solve the crimes (though, in my defense, I was driving while listening so my mind was a bit divided). The stories were long enough to develop the characters and set up interesting mysteries or twists but no so long as to make me lose the thread of the story. They were one and all unique stories with a wide range of crimes, motives, and types of characters. It was also pretty interesting to get a peak into the lifestyle and culture of the early to mid-20th century (they really liked mediums and spiritualists it seemed). If you are looking for a good set of mysteries for a road trip or commute you could do worse than this collection but I am not sure you could do much better.

Over the past few years, I've been exploring Agatha Christie's mysteries and enjoying them once again. I've enjoyed getting back into the old reliables, Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. But I've also enjoyed discovering the Tuppence and Tommy Beresford books and I've also Colonel Race. I've just completed one of her short story collections (I have read others before), The Witness for the Prosecution: And Other Stories, which has two Poirot short stories, but the rest are standalones. I purchased it mainly for The Witness for the Prosecution as I've enjoyed the original movie based on the story very much. The most recent adaptation wasn't quite so enjoyable.Short stories can definitely be hit or miss. I think it takes a special ability to crowd as much information as possible into a short story and make it cohesive and interesting. Saki and PG Wodehouse are excellent short story writers, as is Canadian Alice Munro, to name a few. Agatha Christie is also an excellent short story writer. This might put her in somewhat unique company as she is also a great novelist. This collection consists of 12 stories. Some of the early ones were decidedly edgier than I'm used to from Christie; I include Witness for the Prosecution, Accident (especially, very creepy) and The Fourth Man. There were a couple that left me somewhat confused; especially SOS. For the most part, every story entertained me and often surprised me, even when I thought I'd figured out the basics. The two Poirot's, The Second Gong and Poirot and the Regatta Mystery were each gems in their own right, quick mystery and solutions. All in all, it was a most enjoyable read with each short story having something unique to offer. I look forward to continuing my exploration of Christie's world of mystery. My wife is enjoying a collection of Miss Marple stories, ie, Marple is listening to stories or telling them and solving them, but not necessarily participating in the actual mystery. Sounds neat, eh?
