Otter and Teddy love playing in the garden, but they don't really like the bath that their playtime earns them. Otter and Teddy try hiding and disguising themselves to get out of it, but after Otter Keeper shows them how much fun taking baths can be, they can't get enough of baths!I love this character and the soft lines and color palette used in the artwork. This title is excellent for readers who are just beginning to read independently. This story will help beginning readers develop confidence and the story is funny and solid too, so they will be invested in finding out how it all plays out.Recommended for PreK-2.

An Inexpensive, Fun Otter QuickieWe are big fans of Sam Garton's Otter books, and have a lot of fun with his large format hardbound books. But I was thrilled to find the three "I Can Read" paperbacks, which are great to have around the house for a quick read and which lend themselves to being handled by a brand new two year old reader. These are "Shared Reading" books, which means they are basic and intended for reading to the littlest readers. That said, they aren't in the "see Spot run" tradition, but have a bit more personality and oomph to them.In this book, Otter and his stuffed toy pal Teddy get dirty, are reluctant to take a bath, finally have and enjoy a bath, and then hurry to get dirty again so they can take another bath. That's actually a pretty complex and clever plot for a simple new reader. As always, Otter is a normal, slightly mischievous, personable and relatable hero. Each page has a short, clear sentence. At bath time, "We also splash a lot", and "Everything gets wet", until "It is time to dry off". That's fun and basic, but the ideas are clear and understandable. Between that crispness, the overall appeal of Otter as a character, and the clever and subtly good-humored drawings, (with lots of little jokes scattered around the pages), this book just strikes me as packing a lot of return in a little package.I was a bit afraid that scaling the Otter books down to the "I Can Read" level would just trade on Otter's appeal without actually resulting in a decent book, but I was very happy with this as an entry level reader that can stand on its own. A nice find.

Otter plays with teddy in the mud and gets very dirty. He gets a bath which at first he doesn't want, but then decides he likes it. So he goes outside and gets muddy again so he can have another bath. Very cute.

At the beginning of this adorable story Otter and Teddy do not like baths, but by the end of it Otter Keeper has them convinced that baths are fun. Almost too much so!

Otter is just about my favorite animal main character. Otter always seems to get himself in a bit of trouble and Otter Keeper tries to help him stay on track. Fun illustrations and great text.

Bubbly Otter is charming! Like many young ones, she is not a fan of ending playtime for bath time. And I ask you: who is? After you've played all day and that mud starts to feel comfy, why scrub it off? Of course Otter Keeper is up to the challenge, in nice short sentences and with lovely drawings. There are plenty of explanations about how bath time can be delightful, with bubbles, ducks (and let's not forget Otter's partner in crime, Teddy). Once she's in, Otter can barely bring herself to leave the bath, with the usual ottery conclusions.I have a terrible time keeping my own copies of Otter books, as every child that comes to my home wants to take mine with. And I predict the same fate for this Bath time story, as it's easy for a beginning reader to enjoy, has simple yet engaging drawings and is, fundamentally, enchanting. When I first found Otter, it was rare at the time to find an otter drawing that didn't look like a rug stuck on a wine bottle. Sam Garton's drawings - along with animal generalist Maurice Pledger - remain far and away the best and most graphically pleasing river otters I've seen for children. I hope there are many more offerings from Otter. (And maybe a nice coffee mug or t-shirt, since I can't seem to hold on to the books.)
