James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.

James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full-time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast.

It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.

James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time.

James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.

We read a lot of Pete the Cat books at our house. My two grandchildren (ages 3.5 years and 3) like to read them. This is a Wonder Book that I picked up at the library. I have read this one to them and they have also listened to the Wonder Book. There are many surprises in this book, I think but the main one is the surprise teacher which turns out to be a substitute teacher in Pete’s class.Pete is getting ready to get on the school bus for school. His dad is there but his mom is missing. When Pete gets to school, he realizes why his mom was missing. His mom was already at school. Pete’s mom, Mrs. Cat is going to be his substitute teacher for the day, in his classroom. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know what to do so Pete tells her they go to Art but his mom doesn’t know where to go. She takes them to all the different special classrooms (gym and music) instead. When it’s time for lunch, she takes them outside. What a confusing day yet the kids are having a great day. It’s almost the end of the day and they finally make it to Art. The kids decide to do something special for Mrs. Cat to thank her for such a wonderful day. This is a fun book for little ones. The lettering is easy to read and the story is smooth and makes sense. The pictures are bright and colorful and I like that the pictures are separated from the wording so the words are not buried behind lots of action and colors. Good book for kids who understand what going to school is all about. 4.5 stars

Summary:This book is about Pete the Cat showing up to school one day and finding his mother, Mrs. Cat, in the classroom! The teacher was out for the day, so Pete's mom was the substitute teacher. It was Pete's job to help his mom learn the school and the class schedule. At the end, the whole class made a surprise for her. Evaluation:This book gives a great dialogue to show students how to act around substitute teachers. It provides examples of how Pete and his classmate were helpful and kind to their substitute. Teaching Point:This book would be great to use in an elementary classroom to help teach students about lending a hand, being helpful, and being nice to substitute teachers. Sometimes having a new person enter a classroom can be difficult, so this book would be great for any grade (K-5) to help teach them the proper ways to respond to substitutes.

Pete the Cat gets a big surprise today at school! His mom is the teacher! Let’s have fun with Pete and Mrs. Cat today in class! This book is meant for the early readers, but is still very colorful and has that great artwork known by James Dean. This book has a plot and can be used to help readers understand what the plot of a story is. What do they think the plot of this story is? Can you use what you’ve read to figure it out? It’s also a good stepping stone in learning to read period. It has longer sentences and less pictures, which can help a reader be confident in their progress. They read a whole book!

** spoiler alert ** Pete’s mom is not very smart for leading them into all of these different rooms that say “gym.” And then she has the audacity to ask: “Is this art?” Nah, it’s GYM. Anyway, other than that it is a good read. I kinda just read this for laughs, I know it is meant for a younger audience lmao. I’m sure a kid would love it.

I love the book because I really want my mom to be my teacher. And, Pete's mom was his teacher, and I like that she kept asking that the doors were art, but they were different things.[Transcribed by Dad]

The teacher came and Pete the cat said "Do you want to do art?" "We're in the library!" "Then, once, we went to music, and then we went to art now!" And then, once the art teacher said, we're almost going to go, and the teacher said, "We can do art in our room!" *Thumbs up*

Great comedy via Pete's mom. Also, "Sometimes a different day is an awesome day!". I hope these little wonderful snippets of sage advice are in all of these books. :')

This book was sweet and simple to read and had a good message. Although not extremely high quality it does entertain kids and have a good concise story.
