The 13th Disciple Audiobook Summary

The New York Times bestselling author of Buddha and Jesus weaves together historical narrative, mystery, exciting adventure, and intrigue in this masterfully told novel that reveals surprising discoveries about the unknown last disciple of Christ, and a new understanding of who Jesus was in his final days.

When a solid gold reliquary missing from a church in Belgium suddenly resurfaces in America, a young newspaperman begins to investigate the story. At first, it seems like just another case of a treasure stolen during World War II that has resurfaced. But it soon becomes apparent that much more is at stake.

Hidden within the medieval reliquary is a gold box that holds a sacred relic–a single finger bone–from an anonymous saint. Why would the remains of someone unknown to the Church be considered holy? The search for answers leads to a shocking discovery–a dangerous secret known only to a small band of people. If one touches the reliquary, a sacred vision is received–a vision involving a young girl who had a chance encounter with Jesus just before he was crucified.

The few people who have been blessed with these miraculous messages have banded together into a mysterious school, a closed society that preserves this venerated wisdom. But their knowledge of the young girl and Jesus is at once so fascinating yet so highly controversial that it cannot be shared with the world.

This young girl, curious about the charismatic man named Jesus, embarks on a quest to find out who he really was. What she finds–the knowledge the society protects–is at times far different from the accepted gospels. Could this unknown girl be the 13th Disciple–the last and truest apostle of Christ?

It was first captivating, then confusing but everything became clear at the last part of the book. The story begins with a woman named Meg who suddenly had supernatural experiences which completely changed her life. She became one of the chosen people to experience the stigmata of Christ. Because of this, she met Lilth who is also a seeker of the chosen people who would fulfill the prophecy of the 13th disciple. To cut this short, they met 4 other people with different personalities and backgrounds and altogether, they began their search for the hidden message which the 13th disciple was trying to convey them. The confusing part was the the small flashbacks they had when they time-traveled subconsciously back to the existence of the 13th disciple. I was not able to fully grasp the meaning behind the 13th disciple's past memories. But I was grateful enough that the author had this short explanation at the end of the story about the meaning of the Light they were seeking. This made the story worth it.I admired the concept of how Deepak was able to convey the spiritual message of finding one's Light in a heartfelt, mystical way. The different characters in the story opened up my eyes on the different realities we have in this life. It was Galen who touched my heart the most...Thank you!

I like the message of this book, but getting there is another story. It is an interesting introduction to thinking about God differently via a spiritual journey with a few fictional and historical travelers. For some readers it be will be difficult to get past the unbelievable elements of the story, but if you can suspend your known reality and just go with it, it is useful. My favorite quote, which I wrote down to reference later is this, "To meet God as a reality, you have to reach the zero point, where there is faith in nothing. At the zero point every false idea about God has been abandoned. You cry with all your heart, 'Show yourself as you really are. I'm finished with fakes. Either show yourself, or I am lost.'"I am probably in the right place/space to be reading this book and can relate to this quote personally. If you want to get the gist of it, read the Afterward first, or just read that. It explains his way of thinking and how he infused this way into his characters. Light as awareness and presence is the medium for growth.I've never read anything by Deepak Chopra before, and now I am interested in his other works. I liked it and am in the right space to appreciate the message.

I was definitely enlightened by this book. It reads as a novel but has some commentary at the end that focuses on some religious and spiritual ideals. The reading was timely for my as an Episcopalian in the time of Epiphany were there is a great focus on the light of Christ and being the light in the world.

The 13th Disciple by Deepak Chopra Reading a mystery with a religious undertone was interesting. In some ways you knew the story but there was a new approach to it. I didn’t know there is a whole following of the 13th disciple. Good reading and thought provoking.

My favorite quote, repeated a few times in the book, from Albert Einstein:“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”How I Discovered The Book:I noticed that Deepak was speaking for a New York Open Center event and on a whim, decided to go and see what he had to say, which also turned out to be a book signing for this book. The talk itself was less about the book, and more about his current philosophical and scientific exploration into the 95% of the universe that still is not observable or measurable by science. His exploration is also based on a foundational idea that awareness is an eternal presence despite life, thoughts, and experience being a temporary presence, (which is very much in line with Indian philosophy of souls being recycled and never really disappearing, just getting re-imagined into different avatars.) Deep quantum physics and universal philosophical thinking that is still being explored with the limited resources we have. The Story & Purpose:If you're not into this quantum-style thinking yet, the 13th Disciple is a decently written and much more approachable fictional adventure story that very lightly touches on some spiritual experiences that people have when they start opening up to the idea of a greater awareness beyond themselves and beyond their nurtured dogmatic thinking. Though he never mentions it outright in the fictional dialogue, history has proven that are plenty of real people having similar experiences to what gets lightly described in the book through the characters. I look at this book as being a lot like the Celestine Prophecy- lots of running from place to place as characters wrestle with the adventure of discovery in itself- with some small and brilliant moments of insightful experience. Unlike the Celestine Prophecy, this book dives less into the actual experiences and insights of awareness, and more into the characters and how this awareness affects them on a personal and ego level as they try to wrap their mind and body around what they're experiencing. I do enjoy the very visual outlines of what it may have been like to walk among Jesus in Jerusalem during the Roman occupation. While it does approach spirituality with a study and dialogue concerning Jesus and Christianity, it is in no way a book on Christianity. Jesus is merely a backdrop on which events occur and come together. Deepak seems to have done a lot of great study into religious leaders- as evidenced by his precious books- and this fictional story just provides a sense of place rooted in the Christian dogmas.Either way, it's a great introduction for people who haven't really experienced this "weird crazy awareness stuff" in their life to discover it through fictional allegory. For those who have experienced these things already, it's a reminder that while these experiences may feel unique and remarkable to us when we become aware of them, they are actually part of a larger set of experiences that many people undergo in their journey to greater awareness. If this description intrigues you, you should definitely get your own copy of The 13th Disciple: A Spiritual Adventure

I am not a religious person at all. Nor am I a spiritual person (some friends kid me that the only spirit I embrace is usually found in a bottle, but do not believe them entirely). So I really wonder why I chose to order the book and read it with great enthusiasm (yes I did read this with enthusiasm). I have read some of the non-fiction books written by Deepak Chopra, since I do like to know about things, whether I believe in them or not. When I came across The 13th Disciple, I told myself "I enjoy SF and I enjoy Fantasy, so why not a Spiritual Adventure?". I am glad that I chose to read it.The story involves a Mystery School originally set up by a young girl who was graced by Jesus himself on the day he was to be crucified and becomes the 13th Disciple. The idea, apparently, was to preserve and perpetuate an Invisible Gospel through a set of chosen ones. An unlikely group of participants get involved in a spiritual adventure that turns their lives upside down and takes them on a roller coaster ride of experiences. You will enjoy the book definitely if you have a religious bent of mind. You will enjoy the book if you have just a whiff of spirituality in you. I enjoyed reading this book (I guess I do have that little whiff of spirituality in me somewhere). The narration is swift paced, but I had to slow down quite a bit to re-read certain parts to ensure that I got what was intended, although I am not sure whether I got them correctly. The "Afterword" at the end of the story is a must-read. Only after reading that a few times (believe me, I did read that 2 times) I appreciated why Deepak Chopra is hailed as one of the greatest philosophers and spiritual gurus of modern times. If you do have that little whiff of spirituality in you, or you are just a curious chap like me, go ahead and get hold of the book and read it! The chances are that you will like it - actually quite a lot!

First, Thank you GoodReads.com for the free book. Mr. Chopra, as I started reading this book I thought it might be a conflict with my religious beliefs ( I realize it is fiction) but was happy that it did not. It is a very interesting story about how people react to the spiritual aspect of God. You have a great way of telling the stories and the personalities of the characters in the book. They seemed so real as you read the book. My favorite character is Mare. I also love the cover design of this book. I read one of your health books many years ago so I was quite amazed at this story. I enjoyed it and will read it again in the future. I will definitely recommend this book to my friends and others. Thank you for a great read and I look forward to reading more of your books. You are a talented writer and know how to make characters seem important to the reader.

An eclectic group of people are brought together on a spiritual journey under the title of a mystery school. Personally, I was thrilled to see Chopra had written another fictional book; I loved his story of Merlin and its modern day spin. This book teases the reader with what the mystery school really is and the 13th disciple. I enjoyed how Chopra unveiled each character and their journey toward the mystery school; all they while bringing in pieces and parts of the disciple and their role in the story of Jesus Christ. It's a "God is good" kind of book.

My favorite part was the afterword section, particularly the discussion about light about consciousness.
