The Mercedes Coffin Audiobook Summary
A cold case turns red hot, threatening to consume detective Peter Decker and his wife, Rina Lazarus in the spellbinding new thriller from New York Times bestselling author Faye Kellerman.
Billionaire genius Genoa Greeves never got over the shocking death of her favorite teacher, Bennett “Dr. Ben” Alston Little, murdered execution-style and stuffed into the trunk of his Mercedes Benz. No arrests were ever made. Fifteen years later, the high-tech CEO reads about another execution-style murder. The case is eerily similar and Genoa offers the L.A.P.D. a substantial financial “incentive” if justice is finally served.
Lieutenant Peter Decker resents having to commit valuable manpower to a fifteen-year-old open case. Still, the recent murder does bear a disturbing resemblance to Dr. Ben’s case and Decker can’t help but wonder about a connection. Decker’s team of investigators includes his newly minted Hollywood detective daughter, Cindy Kutiel, while wife Rina Lazarus continues to be his backbone of support. Rina’s worries and fears begin to build as past and present collide with a vengeance, catapulting an unsuspecting Decker closer and closer to the edge of an infinite dark abyss. A relentlessly gripping tale spun by a master, Faye Kellerman’s The Mercedes Coffin races through a dangerous urban world, where truth and justice are fine lines between life and death.

Fifteen years ago, Dr Ben Little, a very popular school VP, was murdered execution style and found in the trunk of his Mercedes. The crime was never solved. One of the students whose life he touched is now a very wealthy woman. When she reads a current article in the newspaper about another man found dead in the trunk of his Mercedes, she believes the two crimes are somehow related. She offers a million dollars to the LAPD to take another look at the cold case. The story follows Lt Peter Decker who is assigned the task of finding Dr Ben's killer through a maze of relationships that tie known associates to both of the murdered men. The story contains a lot of layers as the puzzle pieces come together. This is the first book I've read by the author. I very much appreciated the mystery aspect of the story which was well thought out, and was surprised at the outcome. I also appreciated that triggers were pointed out to us during questioning of various people, giving us a better idea of what the detective got out of it, instead of having it explained to us afterwards. This was just a random pick from a second-hand bookshop. I had no idea it was part of a series, and the 17th part of a series to boot! So it's a testament to the author that she doesn't refer to all that backstory and lose the casual reader like myself. So while there are things I spotted and thought 'I bet that was the plot of a previous book' I was never lost - this story is self-contained.The Cold Case of the title is one that gets reopened when another murder takes place with a very similar MO. So both cases are investigated as they try to find a link. This leads to multiple suspects and witnesses, but Kellerman never lets you get muddled, and that is a real skill, because I've read many books of this ilk where I did get completely confused about who was who.I enjoyed this book. It all leads up to a tense and exciting ending, and a satisfying and believable conclusion. I'd definitely read this author, and this series, again.

Several years ago, Dr. Bennett Little changed socially challenged Genoa Greeves' life in high school. Because of his encouragement, Genoa Greeves rose to her full potential in the computer tech industry and now a billionairess with her own company. Fifteen years after Dr. Little's murder, she found a similar MO with the death of Primo Ekerling, a music producer in Hollywood, shot dead on the head and found inside the trunk of his Mercedes just like Little... (Cindy and her partner checked the car for GTA when she noticed the sagging at the trunk, they popped the lid and found the body). Greeves took her theory to LAPD and to Decker's captain with an incentive of a substantial donation to the Department upon resolution of the cold case... I thought Melinda Little was a selfish needy bitch who could not get a life within her marriage and two children and fed on her vice instead. Because of her, a good man died.

This was my first Faye Kellerman story and I loved it. Lieutenant Detective Drucker is is tasked with trying to solve a 15 year old murder after a more recent murder shows the same pattern as the previous one. The search is instigated by a billionaire who was encouraged by the person who was killed the first time while she was in high school, and was also the person who noticed the similarities. The great thing about this book is that it didn't rush to find the ultimate bad guys who committed either trying. It was well thought out and meticulous, an the eventual ending, while it might not be satisfying for everybody, worked well enough for me. I will be looking for more of her books in the future.

I did this in audiobook version and hated the narrator. I've listened to all of them this way (this time around) and have loved Peter's voice, but not this guy. I hope this is his only book. That said, many reviews have said they didn't like it because it was more police work and less Decker and his family. While that was true, it was well written and a very good story.I do love the picture Kellerman paints in my head as I'm listening to what is going on.

I don't remember having read anything in this series before, but I will now go back and find some other titles. I like a procedural that does not drop details and had follow-through. How Decker keeps all of the plates in the air, I'll never know, but he is relentless in his investigation. Added into the mystery are the interesting details about living a kosher life, as Decker and his family do.I found it a compelling read.

When a new Murder is discovered in Hollywood it is the same MO as a cold case from years ago of Ben Little. A school teacher who was killed execution style in the trunk of his Mercedes car. Now this new Murder is exactly the same way. Faye Kellerman's The Mercedes Coffin was riveting, suspenseful, and the ending was explosive. Great book

When Billionaire Genoa Greeves reads about a murder that is like the murder of her favorite teacher 15 years earlier she goes to the police to try and find who killed the teacher. Peter Decker is assigned the case and while working the cold case he also works on the current murder

This is another of the series where I am going back and reading those I missed. This is very well written. The characters and plot are believable. There are only a few things, such as pagers and music genre's that make it dated.

Good story, although not a page turner. Peter Decker is investigating a cold case which is similar to a recent murder. The murder never gets completely solved, so some assumptions and guesses help bring it to a conclusion
