The Under Dog Audiobook Summary

Pretty Lily Margrave is not convinced that Hercule Poirot is needed in the matter of Sir Atwell’s murder. At the request of her employer, Lady Atwell, she has already recounted what happened ten days ago in the Tower Room, and the victim’s nephew has been charged with the murder. Nevertheless, Lady Atwell brings Poirot up to the great house, Mon Repos, to see if he can find out anything. While at first the family is struck by Poirot’s ardent endeavor to uncover what befell Sir Atwell, his insistence on looking into every nook and cranny becomes too much for some to bear. A scrap of material, the contents of a tiny box, and his singular ingenuity lead the detective to uncover who is behind this violent act.

5 Stars. Poirot at his best. One of my favourites, although it's not as well known as many of Christie's others. Poirot realizes and utilizes the effect he has on people - his unique appearance, idiosyncrasies, and exasperating habit of hinting at, but not clarifying his progress. He also understands that many anticipate the activities of detectives when looking into a crime. In other entries including the novels, he dismisses such things as searching for clues and following suspects. Instead he questions people and reverts to his little grey cells. Not this time. All of his skills come into play in "The Under Dog." The story first appeared in "Mystery Magazine" in the USA in 1926. My read was from "Hercule Poirot The Complete Short Stories" of 1999. Someone put a knife to Sir Reuben Astwell late in the evening while he worked in his study at the Astwell's mansion called Mon Repos. My Rest was certainly not the appropriate name for this household. Sir Reuben and his brother Victor visiting from Africa have mercurial tempers. Did Charles Leverson respond on this occasion and explode to kill his uncle? Was he the under dog? Christie kept me guessing. (April 2021)

Audible.com released this short story — long enough for a novella, actually — from Dame Agatha Christie’s 1951 short story collection, eponymously titled The Under Dog and Other Stories. Read as usual by Hugh Fraser, the story deals with the murder of Sir Reuben Astwell for which his ne’er-do-well nephew Charles Leverson has been arrested. Despite overwhelming evidence, Sir Reuben’s widow, Lady Astwell, a great believer in intuition, is certain that her nephew by marriage is innocent and summons detective Hercule Poirot. No need to doubt that the Belgian detective will apply his little gray cells to the problem and come up with the truth. It even has a finale in which Poirot gathers all of the suspects into the Tower for a dramatic reveal! “The Under Dog” is a great way to while away a few hours.

A quick little story featuring Poirot at his finest. This is the only short story out of Poirot's Early Cases: 18 Hercule Poirot Mysteries that I hadn't already read, so finding this standalone was lucky.

Like all of Christie's stories, the ending you never expected. Read it, is a short story but very enjoyable in my opinion.

Lady Astwell sends Miss Lily Margrave to ask Poirot to come find out who murdered her husband. Lily's demeanor intrigues Poirot and he makes his investigations. The police have arrested one of the heirs, but Lady Astwell is adamant that he did not do it and the secretary did it instead.During his investigations, Poirot uncovers love affairs, siblings, and motive for the crime. Victor, the victim's brother, had a temper; Lily was about to be fired; Lord amd Lady Astwell had a tumultuous relationship. His investigations also uncover the murderer.Who done it? (view spoiler)[ Lady Astwell was correct: it was the secretary. He had taken the victim's verbal abuse for so many years and then snapped and killed him after one tirade. (hide spoiler)]

** spoiler alert ** A bit predictable, but enjoyable.I find that I tend to inevitably root for the villain in many of Christie's works. I wanted the secretary to be innocent, even though it was pretty obvious he was going to be the villain of the piece. I can't say I blame the secretary - his boss was an abusive jerk that would see a lawsuit now days. Many of Christie's victims are terrible people. I usually find myself thinking that they wouldn't be murdered if they were less awful. They literally help create the villains that ultimately kill them.

A rather good story by Agatha Christie. This is a pure Poirot story with no Hastings in sight. No reason is given for him not being around. Doesn’t matter either. The story revolves around a murdered Husband, all the evidence points to one man, the murdered wife adamantly believes it is someone else, even with no evidence. Who is the murderer and how with Poirot prove it?The more I read Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, the more I see the similarities is style and format, as, this could easily have been Sherlock Holmes.

Every time I say I have finished reading all of Agatha Christie's books, a new one pops up. This is my latest discovery. I listened to it and wasn't disappointed. It must be an early Hercule Poirot book . His companion is his 'valet' George instead of the well known Captain Hastings. I'm not sure why George was dropped for Hastings, but both supporting characters are amicable. The plot takes all the usual twists and turns of a traditional Christie book, making it a cozy mystery through and through. Read/listen to it while relaxing with a warm drink.

Once again, Poirot is clever. Christie once again mocks Sherlock Holmes by having Poirot crawl around on the floor looking for clues when we really know that all he is doing is riling everyone up and waiting for the true killer to make a mistake and expose themselves. She also mocks those who doubt a woman’s intuition! Love it!

After all these stories by Agatha,i once again find myself not able to guess the murderer .Maybe he or she is neither given much dialogues nor given more content to take attention away from them.Well written

This story was perfect. It has many characters with different motives and Poirot has to sort all the lies from the truth fitting into a tight timeline. My favourites were the interactions between Poirot and George :-D hope there is more of him in other stories I will read
