About Fannie Flagg

Fannie Flagg (Patricia Neal) was born in September of 1944 in Birmingham, Alabama, where she spent most of her childhood. Her father encouraged her to write, and Flagg listened, writing her first stage play when she was only ten years old.

As a teenager, Flagg entered the Miss Alabama pageant and won a one-year scholarship to a local acting school. After that, Flagg landed a job as a co-host of the Morning Show on WBRC-TV in Birmingham. When Flagg asked for a raise and didn’t receive it, she decided to quit and move to New York.

Since there was already a well-established actress named Patricia Neal, Flagg had to choose a stage name. She opted for Fannie Flagg based on the suggestions of her grandfather and a friend.

During the 1960s, Flagg was writing skits for a nightclub in New York named Upstairs at the Downstairs. One night, she had to go on stage because one of the performers was sick. That’s when Allen Funt, the Candid Camera creator, noticed her talent.

Not long after, Funt invited Flagg to work for him, first as a writer and later as a performer. She also wrote for, produced, and appeared in several other television specials.

In 1978, Flagg entered a fiction contest with her collection of short stories and won first place. These short stories were the basis for Coming Attractions, the first novel she published in 1981.

Eleven years later, the book was reissued under the name Flagg wanted to use originally: Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man. The book stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for ten weeks.

Many people agree that Flagg’s best novel is Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which was published in 1987. Popular authors like Eudora Welty and Harper Lee praised the book.

Flagg even co-wrote a screenplay based on the book, which was later turned into a movie. Flagg’s script was nominated for an Academy Award (Oscar) and won the Scripter Award for best screenplay of the year. Flagg is also the winner of the Harper Lee Prize.

Elner wakes up in her hospital bed, much to her neighbors’ surprise. The end of the book is a collection of recipes for dishes Elner’s neighbors made for her funeral.
