This Scot of Mine Audiobook Summary

A daring deception…

Desperate to escape her vile fiance, Lady Clara devises a bold lie–that she’s pregnant with another man’s child. With her reputation in tatters, Clara flees to Scotland to live out her days in disgrace, resigned to her fate as a spinster…until she claps eyes on the powerful and wickedly handsome Laird Hunt MacLarin.

She’s the answer to his curse…

Laird of an ancient clan, Hunt needs an heir, but he comes from a long line of men cursed to die before the birth of their firstborn. When the Duke of Autenberry approaches him with a proposition–marry my ruined sister–it seems the perfect solution. Even better, the defiant lass stirs him to his very soul.

No escaping the truth…

Except marriage cannot set them free. No matter how much Hunt desires her. No matter how much Clara burns for him. Soon she is falling for her husband, but is love enough to end the curse? Or is the tragic history of the MacLarin Clan doomed to repeat itself?

Lover of Romance

March 07, 2019

This review was originally posted on Addicted To RomanceI received this book for free from Avon in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. This Scot Of Mine is the fourth book in Jordan's "Rogue Files" series and I have had a blast with this book and its my favorite of the series so far. I still need to read book one, (which I have heard is the fan favorite) however, this book really worked for me and I read it a lot quicker than I ever expected. Sophie Jordan is a author I will always be a fan of, I just admire how she writes and she just adds spice to regency that can become a bit boring if you read too much of it. But this book was simply wonderful and it shows how few resources women had to make a good life for themselves and how little rights they had and what strength we see in them. We see it so well in this book. Our story begins with our heroine, Lady Clara, who had to rescue herself from having to marry a man she didn't like and ruin herself in scandal by claiming to be with child. She is traveling to be with her brother who lives in Scotland. On her way to her brother's home, she and her maid and close friend, take a break at a local inn and they get caught up in a bar brawl between two Scots over a bull. And one of them she finds terribly attractive but she is appalled by the level of violence over a cow. As she arrives at her brother's home, she is stunned when his closest friend and neighbor, is the same Scot she saw at the inn.Our hero, Hunt MacLarin, never expected to have such a chemistry with Lady Clara. Hunt fears the future and the risk of having a child. His family has been living under a curse for generations. This curse is one where  every Laird, will never be alive long enough to see their child born. Fatal accidents have killed both Hunt's father and grandfather and he doesn't want the same to happen to him. When he learns that Lad Clara is pregnant though, its the answer to his prayers. He can have a family without being at risk of dying early in his life. There is a strong attraction between Hunt and Clara, and as they form a connection, they will have to rely on each other to face their fears and embrace the present and not concern themselves over the future and to live in the moment. This book truly is a test for both of these characters and I was in love with the "curse". I love seeing some of my favorite authors implement curses into their books, especially into a regency historical romance. Now in this book, I wouldn't say the "curse" aspect isn't as strong as what I have seen other authors write in the past, but I really enjoyed how it didn't overwhelm the story. I really adored the sizzles that pass between the hero and the heroine. Its simply delightful and one of my favorite aspects of the story. From their first meeting, the attraction between these two is heartfelt and what I really appreciated is how even though Clara could have kept the truth from Hunt she chose not to and boy I respected her even more for that. For being upfront and honest, even if that meant Hunt not being willing to marry her. But these two find their way and I really loved seeing how the curse ends here and how Jordan writes it and seeing the importance of not taking the ones you love for granted and also never taking life for granted, to appreciate the precious time we have now. I really loved seeing these characters come together and boy there is so much charm and sensuality in this story. There is a great mix of delightful humor that comes with a Sophie Jordan novel, but some marvelous intrigue too that I was drawn into.Overall I found This Scot Of Mine to be a sensational romance that delivers in style, poise, and wit!!

**3.5 Stars**What would we call this trope? The reverse secret baby trope? Idk but it was a unique premise that I enjoyed! One of the best parts of any Sophie Jordan novel is how readable her writing is. I would sit down with THIS SCOT OF MINE, and before I knew it, I was at 25%.The book follows Lady Clara who has had to uproot her whole life and move to Scotland to live with her brother after a scandal in England. On the way, she meets a rowdy Scottish man who brawls over cows. He turns out to be the laird of the neighboring estate.Sophie Jordan writes good characters; that’s just a fact. I liked Clara. She was way over dramatic, but I think that was purposeful and it usually made me laugh instead of annoying me. Hunt was adorable, besides his weird obsession with superstition. I liked his sly sense of humor and the way he provoked Clara. Plus, we all know that Ms. Jordan’s love scenes are steamy and super fun.I wish there had been additional on the screen interactions between Clara and Hunt. I felt like a lot of their life together took place off the page, so it was hard to understand their connection besides an instant connection first meeting. I also thought the build up of Clara’s backstory was interesting, but I wanted more from it. There was a lot build-up but no follow through with a character I thought would be more of a villain.Overall, this was a quick and fun historical romance about two stubborn people falling in love in spite of themselves. I am excited to read the next book in the series about Clara’s companion!**I received an ARC of this book in order to provide an honest review**Find/Follow me on Twitter Instagram and my blog !!

Her need to get away from the Earl of Rolland was so great, that Lady Clara Autenberry deliberately ruined herself by telling him she was expecting another man's baby. Clara then fled to her brother's in Scotland to live out the rest of her life in spinsterish misery. If only she had not met that brawny Scot, Laird Hunt MacLarin. Hunt is an honourable man, he would have loved to have a family of his own, but there is that curse that has plagued the MacLarins for generations. A MacLarin man does not survive the birth of his first child. But what if it's another man's child? After reading the book description, if you think you know what to expect, think again. It takes a lot for me to really cry, and towards the end, the waterworks wouldn't stop! I could not imagine how there could ever be a happily ever after, and it was achieved with dazzling brilliance! Sophie Jordan has again accomplished the impossible; she found every clever way to turn this type of story around and make it entirely original. There are only a few characters in the novel, but every one of them managed to surprise me several times. Both Clara and Hunt are truly lovely people, and the romance is fabulous. It progressed logically, it was very passionate, there was quite a bit of drama, no silliness, and it was so well done! THIS SCOT OF MINE is such a marvellous story that I devoured it in no time, and it is a full-length novel! What a treat!I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

It’s been a while since I have read the other books of this series. For a while, I didn’t realize there was more than 3. So while reviews of previous books may compared them to the rest of the series, I can’t with this one since I have vague memories. I do know that Sophie Jordan is fantastic at writing historical romance novels. This book is just another point in her favor. Both characters were so fun, the romance was filled with all sorts of angst, and it was such a funny scenario. In the beginning when she was ideal for him, after he found out the truth, and during the entire thing. Every accident was only a point in the curse’s favor. It was a lovely romance between the two of them. Despite the instant attraction and early marriage, the romance progressed at a good rate; nothing too quick. Such a great read and I can’t wait to jump into the next one!

Lady Clara Autenberry is completely disenchanted with her unpleasant fiancé. She devises an unusual plan. She tells him that she is pregnant with another man's child. This ruins her in his eyes. What's more is she is ruined in the eyes of society, so Clara flees to Scotland, to the hone of her brother, Marcus, the duke of Autenberry, and his wife, Alyse. She may alwas be a spinster, but at least the ruination and unavoidable gossip won't follow her. When she mees Laird Hunt MacLarin, her thoughts of forever being alone all but flee in her mind. She is very much drawn to him. Hunt is equally enthralled with Clara, but due to a curse that has afflicted his father and grandfather, he feels he must always be unmarried. When Marcus suggests that Hunt marry his sister, it is for a specific reason - beyond the attraction. The thing is, Hunt needs an heir, but when men in his family line get close to fatherhood, they are beset by tragedy and they have all died.Hunt has an unbelievable opportunity to become a father. As he has not impregnated Clara, he won't be affected by the curse. Maybe they can enjoy the carnal pleasures of husband and wife for a time, until the child is born, and then the can continue on living seperate lives, albeit husband and wife. A perfect plan.No plan is foolproof, however. At first, Clara refuses Hunts offer of marriage. When she does choose to marry him, however, she knows she must tell him of the fact that she is not pregnant. Quite naturally, they fall for one another, and Marcus, indeed, does come under the threat of the curse. This Scot of Mine was a fun story, full of steam, romance, the aforementioned curse, and unusual accidents. The story flowed quickly and had a terrific conclusion. This was a nice addition to a successful series. I look forward to continuing this series. This Scot of Mine is the fourth book in The Rogue Files series, preceded by While the Duke Was Sleeping (2016) and The Scandal of it All (2017) and The Duke Buys a Bride (2018), to be followed by The Duke's Stolen Bride, due for release this fall. Many thanks to Avon and to Edelweiss for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

I received an ARC of this book to read through Edelweiss Plus in exchange for a fair review. This Scot Of Mine by Sophie Jordan is the fourth book in her Rogue Files series. It can be read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading the series as it’s very enjoyable. When the true character of her betrothed becomes clear to her Lady Clara Autenberry unable to get out of the engagement any other way has let it be known she is ruined. Banished to her brothers house in Scotland, she meets Laird Hunt MacLaren and sparks fly. Hunt has never considered marrying because he believes his family to be under a curse that says he will die before his first child draws breath. He proposes to Clara thinking to get around the curse because he assumes that the rumours around her banishment are true and she is already pregnant. Clara not believing in curses, not wanting to become a spinster and attracted to Hunt accepts. I very much enjoyed this delightful tale of a not so convenient marriage of convenience. This is the fourth book in The Rogue Files series. The book features secrets, a family curse, and mishaps along the way. I don’t really have a whole lot to say about it other than it was a fun read and I enjoyed the characters.

Lady Clara Autenberry is ruined by her own hand, with help from a less-than-savory former fiancé. Discovering far too late that her betrothed is not what he seems and not being able to reconcile her soon-to-be life with her own example of love and happiness in her family, she pretends to have strayed and become pregnant, all for him to drop her. Of course, being the age it was, the plan works, but Clara is ruined and the subject of gossip and shunning by the tonne, a group that she had always found judgmental and difficult. To save her family in London from her scandal, she and her former governess, now companion, Marion, set off for her older brother’s house in Scotland, where she is welcomed and will be a help when his wife has their first child. Excited for the change although sad for the separation and chaos she’s leaving behind, they undertake the journey. Unfortunately, not being able to be honest with her own family, in fact only Marion knows of her lies, Clara arrives in Scotland at her brother’s house, warmly welcomed, but it is clear that they are worried for her. And, her first night she is to dine with her brother, his wife and their “friend”, a dashing Scot that she ‘met’ in the midst of a tavern brawl, and she’s not been able to forget her reactions to him. Hunt MacLarin is the Laird of the clan, taking his responsibility for his people seriously without actually ever believing he can find love or father a child due to a curse on his family. But the English lady has captured his interest, unlike any before her, and with his friend Autenberry explaining her reasons for being in Scotland, Hunt thinks he has found the perfect solution. A ready made family if he and Clara should marry, saving her from the disgrace, her child from the ignominy of bastard and allowing him to raise and love a child, despite the curse. This was quick reading, clever and while a bit worrisome with the deception, the oft repeated curse and some out of historic context language, both Clara and Hunt are adorable. He’s so determined to care for his clan and family, and desperately wants to be a father, husband and protector all which conflict with the curse, and Clara is so lacking in self-esteem – being a different “type’ to the norm with her olive complexion and dark hair. Having the example of love and happiness in her own childhood home, and now with her mother remarried and raising young twins, she’s not only intrigued by Hunt but reveling in the quiet surety of his regard. Well, mostly. She meant to tell him the ‘real’ story before their wedding night, and well, she didn’t. And it’s not until the morning after that he knows the real story – one that he and his grandmother – a fearsome believer in the curse is happy with, and several ‘near misses’ serve to reinforce the sense of doom. Clever escapist reading that isn’t highly original and occasionally repetitive, but fitting in with the ‘rogues who really aren’t” theme of the series and providing some laughter and heart along the way. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility. I received a free copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads 5 Stars This Scot of Mine is the 4th installment of The Rogue Files series, and I can attest to the fact that it can easily be read as a standalone. When I sat down to review this title, I made the surprising discovery that I've only read installments 2 & 4. In the future, I plan on going back to book 1, rereading 2, and so forth. Lady Clara is embroiled in several scandals of her self-creation in order to have an excuse to leave her affianced, whom she learned is not the man she felt him to be. With this being historical romance, with the societal pressures placed on women, this scheme took a lot of moxie on Clara's part. She flees to Scotland to her brother's for safety, who believes her schemes, thinking she's truly pregnant, which leads to some angsty deliciousness. On her journey, she meets Hunt... After their meet-cute of sorts, where they didn't exchange names, Hunt is surprised to discover the woman he met is none other than his best friend's sister. Intrigued with Clara, Laird Hunt MacLarin feels he's found the solution to the curse he believes he's been afflicted. Instant-intrigue, insta-lust, but the novel doesn't fall into the trap of insta-love. Clara and Hunt fight their attraction, leading to many banter filled interactions dripping with romantic tension, creating a believable connection. I couldn't read fast enough to see how they would behave around one another next. Ordinarily, the purpose of a romance novel is to get married, a quick epilogue with a happily ever after, but this novel takes a different turn. Obviously in this genre, the couple will get together, so this isn't a spoiler. The marriage is a slight focal point, but not the ending. The mystery unfolds after the marriage, where the story turns unique, as the curse seems to come to fruition. Not to mention deceptions are revealed, where they felt they were doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, mainly Clara taking her brother's advice, as they both so badly wanted to 'cure' Hunt. The novel was fun yet emotional, lighthearted yet at times heavy hitting. The unique premise made it a page-turner. I highly recommend Sophie Jordan to historical romance readers. Not only do I look forward to the next in the series, I cannot wait to go back to the beginning, as it was a happy surprise to realize there are two books waiting for me that I've yet to read.

I was surprised to see that the reviews for This Scot of Mine were not particularly favorable on Goodreads, though I'm happy I ignored them because I found this book to be very sweet. It reminded me very much of Highlander in Love by Julia London, one of my fave Highlander Romances. The basic premise is the sexy Laird from the previous books become close friends with the Duke of Austenberry so when his ruined sister moves to Scotland supposedly with child, he instantly offers his hand in marriage because he sees it as the best solution to his family curse. The men in his family all die before their child takes their first breath. He could raise her bastard child as his own and as long as he keeps their relationship in name only he can live out his life in peace. He is even happy to enjoy her as a real wife while she is with child. The only problem is she isn't pregnant, she spreads this lie to get out of an engagement with a cruel man. She marries him sure the curse is dumb and they spend one night together... then all these accidents start to put Hunt's life in danger. I had a great time with this book, it may have dragged a bit more than the previous books in the series but still a solid 3.5⭐

4 Stars. Beware if you hate Instalove. It was insta something let me tell you that. Everything was FAST. This by far wasn't the greatest book in terms of story. But damn was this book FUN! It may just be me. But I had such a good time reading this. I read it in one day and it was so enjoyable. These characters BARELY know each other and we don't know them either. But the premise was so damn fun that I didn't care. Now what stopped this from being a 5star enjoyment read was TWO things. The damn curse being A REAL CURSE. I thought it would be obviously a murder plot. Someone was out killing his first male relative. That's what I wanted. It was not received. And the second thing is Catriona. We didn't need her to have a name. We didn't need that scene with her either. Maybe that was the red herring that caused me to believe there would be a murderer instead of a curse. Here's a spoiler about how I feel about that resolution (view spoiler)[HOW DID THEY BREAK THE CURSE EXACTLY? HOW WAS HE ANY DIFFERENT FROM HIS OTHER MALE RELATIONS (hide spoiler)]What I did like: the emotions. I know I know, I said I didn't know these people like that and that they didn't know each other, but HEAR ME OUT. I argue the importance of romance books to all those around me. They are very important to me. They can discuss important topics too. Here's the topic this book discussed in a way that ultimately didn't happen but still. This was basically the "Terminal Illness Plot" It wasn't because obvi he doesn't die. But hear me out. How would people expecting a child, live out the rest of their days knowing that the one will die before the birth? There was a tone for the second half of the book that the curse was very real and that it really was just a waiting game. Even the heroine had to realize it's truth. And when the sister-in-law's baby was born and the main couple had to come to terms what they believed they wouldn't get to experience that HURT. I cried real tears. That would be something very hard to accept and he had no choice. These scenes were so emotional to everyone involved and I felt that emotion. I cared. The first love scene was actually really good. The other ones felt like placeholders for what should have been them actually getting to know each other.I for some reasons hoped Graham would end up with Marian (there wasn't anything that would point towards that except one comment Graham made). This book read so fast it felt like a novella. Our hero was so fucking considerate even when he was kind of mean.Quotes:"It may also be worth mentioning. I'll be a good father tae your bairn." The air left her lungs in a whoosh. She felt his words to the vary marrow of her bones. He was acknowledging she carried another man's child.Pg 146,170,266,296,304, 317
