Where Have All the Boys Gone? Audiobook Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Jenny Colgan comes this hilarious romance about a woman who trades in the comforts of city life in hopes of finding love in a small Scottish town in the middle of nowhere.

Faced with the harsh reality that there are 25,000 more women than men in London, Katie’s dating prospects are at an all-time low. While she’s glad it’s not a man’s world anymore, it wouldn’t hurt if there were more eligible bachelors.

More likely to get murdered than married, according to gleeful media reports, Katie resigns herself to the fact that there’s no sex in the city for her and decides to head for the hills–or the Scottish Highlands to be exact. Despite the fact she’s never been one for muddy rain boats–and Fairlish is in the middle of nowhere–the tiny town does have one major draw: men. LOTS of them!

But while Katie relishes the chance to do battle with armies of admirers, she’s not excited about going head to head with her shady new boss, Harry. At least there’s the local eye-candy to distract her, including gorgeous newshound Iain. But he is at loggerheads with Harry, and she can’t afford to get on Harry’s bad side any more than she already has.

Life in the country might not be one big roll in the hay, but now that Katie has taken the plunge, can she ever turn her back on the delights of Fairlish and return to city life…?

Browsing trough my local library's shelf, an amazin and a bit funny book title cought my attention: Where Have All The Boys Gone? With the adorable cover and the fact that it is written by Jenny Colgan, an author I want to check out for the longest time, I just had to borrow it.The story follows three friends in their late twenties. One day, they were just minding their own girly buisness, when they saw an article in the newspaper which said that a single girl in London has a bigger chance to be murdered then to find herself a man.I don't think I have to tell you what girls' reaction was. Already stressed out, they started to worry they'll never find a decent man for themselves…This book was one really good entertaiment. The story pulled me in and I was just having a great time reading it. I didn't think about anything, I just enjoyed the ride.Almost all the charaters in this book were likeable, although I didn't feel attached to any of them. There was one guy I didn't particurarly like (Harry) because I found him to be too judgamental, but the world is full of people like him, which made me appreciate him as a character.I don't think that every fictional guy has to be swoon worthy and perfect, because life doesn't work that way.The writing style is really good. Colgan captured the atmosphere of a little Scottish town in such an amazing way (that was my favorite aspect of the story). She also handled very well an inner struggle of characters. Because of that, it was very easy to keep up with their process of thinking that lead them to make decisions they made. This book is written over ten years ago and now when I read it, I want to check out some of Colgan's new work to see how she developed as an author.Overall, if you want to read a book just to occupy your mind, make you laugh on the way (I even cought myself laughing out loud at times) and make you forget about the world around you, I think this book is a good choice for you. I've read a lot of mixed reviews on this book. Lots of DNF, because people couldn't get into the story, or didn't like the characters...I didn't personally feel like this book dragged, in fact it was probably one of the quickest reads I've had this year. I thought the humor was spot on for my own sense of humor. Katie dealing with keeping up with society in London and her friends who are doing the same, albeit seem to be stunted in maturity lol, was relatable. Katie's a 30 something year old trying to navigate what life "should" look like, in a dog eat dog world". Living in a large populated city anywhere, this book focuses on superficial stuff at times (with some outdated comparisons). IRL, people do think of this stuff daily, so the idea of all the weight and diet culture talk is more like, "We have to keep up with what everyone expects of us". As for the "usual Jenny Colgan characters", it did feel a bit JC standard with the main character and her crazy best friend who doesn't hesitate to speak her mind. But, regardless I found the characters to be plenty developed for a shorter read, and I definitely loved gruff 'ol Harry's character! Some things were cheesy, like Ewan McGregor turning up (lol), but all in all, I really enjoyed this light fluffy read, and lets be real, any book about the highlands of Scotland and passionate highlanders will always get my seal of approval.

Three and a half stars.Pleasant, if slightly dated romantic comedy in the Katie Fforde school of writing.Katie works in PR in London, she, her best friend Louise and her boss Olivia all bemoan the lack of decent men in London. After being mugged in Central London Katie applies for a job doing the PR for Fairlish Forestry Commission in the Highlands of Scotland, despite having previously only done PR for things like make-up and ice-cream.Although her boss at the Forestry Commission Harry is grumpy and looks like a younger Gordon Brown (see what I mean about dated? FYI, Gordon Brown was an MP and Prime Minister between 2007 and 2010), the amazing thing about Fairlish is the abundance of men, 16 men to every woman they say, including her boss' arch enemy, newspaperman Iain.Harry is trying to prevent a local businessman cutting down the beautiful forests to build yet another golf course and he needs Katie's assistance. Cue much hilarity, references to painting men's bottoms blue (in Braveheart style), local radio shows, and many quaint Scottish characters. This is clearly one of Jenny Colgan's earlier novels, the humour feels a little forced, the characters a bit too quirky, as if she's trying too hard compared with something like The Bookshop on the Shore. Nevertheless, if you like the idea of our plucky heroine organising a ball for 500 people in the Laird's crumbling mansion to raise awareness of the cause, including celebrities such as Ewan McGregor and Richard and Judy (big daytime TV hosts back in the day) then this light-hearted romance could be right up your street (or glen, since this is the Highlands).

Finally, a romance that didn't consist of wedgie sex, ahem, (Fix Her Up 😬) or penis descriptions. This was a full on fluff cloud romance, just my sip of tea! I have been searching for a little baby like this for awhile. I needed something to lift my grumpies up and fill my heart with a little pitter patter, and that's what I got.Read this charming little tale if you're looking for a light marshmallow read. Now I want s'mores.

I received an ARC of this book to read through Edelweiss+ in exchange for a fair review. Where Have All The Boys Gone by Jenny Colgan is a lovely romantic comedy novel with my favourite enemies to lovers trope. On her way home from a depressing blind date, Katie Watson gets mugged and she begins to seriously question her desire to remain in London. She notices an ad for a public relations person in a small Scottish town and decides to apply. It’s a ten-hour train ride from London to Fairlish and when she arrives there is no station and it’s pouring down rain. Her prospective employer Harry Barr arrives to pick her up and their meeting goes so well minutes later she’s back on the next train to London. The Fairlish Forestry Commission still needs a PR person to help save a forest and hires the firm Katie works for in London and her boss Olivia sends her back to Scotland with their friend Louise tagging along for company as she needs a change from London as well. Katie and Louise are definitely fish out of water in the tiny town that has a lot more men than women, including dashing newspaperman Ian Kinross who just may be the man for Katie because she would never fall for her annoying curmudgeonly boss Harry. I enjoyed this book immensely for both it’s humour and it’s more serious moments. Light Steam. Well, Jenny Colgan has done it again. At first, I thought this was going to be another London dating scene book similar to My Very 90's Romance, which I absolutely hated. But then, the main character, Katie, with her friend, Louise in tow, head off for Fairlish, Scotland to do PR work for the two-man forestry department to prevent the destruction of the local forest for a golf course and all that it would entail. Many local, quirky characters are met there and there were several laugh out loud moments in the book. So, basically, Ms Colgan returned to her usual plot formula and I, for one, am delighted.

I'm a fan of Jenny Colgan and I assume this is one of her first book because it's a typical chick lit, one of those I was enjoying in the last decades. It's entertaining and fun read but it misses some of the elements that make me love this author. It's escapism at high level but it's also one of those book you read and forget.Recommended if you want an old-style chick lit. Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

I was given this book for my birthday and approached it with some trepidation as it is not my usual genre. However, it was a perfect summer read and I very much enjoyed it. I laughed out loud so often that my husband is now reading the book and he never reads anything, as he is more into cryptic crosswords and sudoku. I liked it!

This is a book completely devoid of any reality whatsoever - except we all know an Olivia, albeit not as extreme as the one in the book, but we all know one. The denouement comes as no surprise whatsoever to the reader, even if it does to the main character, Katie. It is complete and utter fluff. However, it is well written fluff that entertains and keeps you turning the pages wanting to see what disastrous mess Katie is going to get in to next. As you can tell by the 4 star rating, I thoroughly enjoyed every second I had reading this book.Fairlish comes across as a bit of a Brigadoon type place, but as many places in the Highlands of Scotland have that distinct vibe to them then that comes as no surprise. The surprise comes from how welcome the locals make Katie and Lauren, two Southerners who decamp up there when Katie gets seconded on a PR job up there and Lauren is simply running away from the disaster that was her romantic life. Either everyone living there is transplanted from the South or they are the strangest lot of Highlanders I've ever come across. It is not a laugh out loud book but it is definitely humorous and I did find myself grinning my way through it. It is light and fresh and I really enjoyed the juxtaposition between the London activity and Fairlish. Particularly how the change of pace affects both Katie and Lauren and, eventually, alters their outlooks on how life should be lived or, rather, how their individual lives should be lived. This is a perfect holiday read, especially is the weather is as unclement as a British summer usually is.

Where Have All the Boys Gone by Jenny Colgan is a re-issue that was first published in 2005. But wait...It was actually, surprisingly, very good! As anyone who has read any author for awhile knows, sometimes their earlier work is not as good as their later work. And honestly, that’s how it’s supposed to be. So when I discovered that I had preordered a re-issue I almost cancelled the order. But Scotland called to me! I love Scotland-Scottish men, Lairds, bagpipes, you get the drift. Katie Watson and her friends are young, London based women. When Katie is mugged, she goes to Scotland looking for a new job. However, once there, she decides Scotland isn’t for her and gets back on the train to London. As fate would have it, though, Katie is sent back to Scotland by her boss (unaware of her previous journey) as a PR rep for the Fairlish Forestry Commission. Fairlish, in the Scottish Highlands, is having a number of issues including developers wanting to tear down the forest, and the fact that men outnumber women 15 to 1. As Katie sets about helping to save the trees, she also has multiple personal issues, as well as romantic issues. I enjoyed my time in Scotland. I did read this on Kindle, as well as listened on audiobook. While I enjoyed listening to the narrator, who did a great job on both the English and Scottish accents, it was hard to understand her Scottish brogue. But I loved the quirky characters (some more than others), and I thought the pace of the book was good. If I have one negative it would be that the relationship between Katie and Harry, specifically any romantic overtures, needed to be developed more. I’ve read enough to know there would be a love triangle but it wasn’t very strongly set up so I wasn’t really rooting for either man.Lastly, I just want to shout out to Netflix: PLEASE MAKE THIS A MOVIE! I would shout out to Hallmark Channel, but I don’t think they would appreciate “blue arses.”

Anytime there is a new Jenny Colgan book I’ve got to pick it up. She reminds me a bit of Sophie Kinsella. Light and fun and the settings are great. This one was really fun and I enjoyed the whole premise.
