Winning from Within Audiobook Summary

Whether you run a Fortune 500 company or serve as CEO of your household, negotiating effectively is crucial to leading wisely and living well.

Leading and living are a series of constant negotiations. Consider what goes on during your typical week: Can you influence your client to accept your proposal? Will you persuade colleagues to give you the resources you need to finish your project? How will you ask your neighbor to switch carpool days so that you will finally have time to get to the gym?

According to conventional wisdom, a “win-win” outcome is the hallmark of success. However, until now, advice on getting there has overlooked one crucial element. It turns out that the most important negotiations you have, the ones that drive the impact of your leadership and the quality of your life, are the ones you have with yourself.

What does negotiating with yourself mean? It’s what happens when you want to stay at the office, but also want to keep your promise to the family to get home in time for dinner. Or when one side of you votes to roll the dice and go for your dream job, while another worries about paying the mortgage. It’s what you do when one part of you wants to give your relationship every chance to work, while another knows that this time it’s really over.

When you’re of more than one mind about what to do, negotiating with yourself is an essential skill. Should you say yes or no, or should you stall for time? Offer an olive branch or lay down the law? Speak your mind or hold your peace? When you know how to win the tug-of-wars inside of you, then you can “get to yes” in lasting and transformational ways.

With honesty, humor, and fresh ideas, Winning from Within gives you a clear road map for knowing your inner world and a method for sorting yourself out.

Whether you’re struggling with a difficult customer or arguing with your spouse, by understanding what leadership and negotiation expert Erica Ariel Fox calls your “inner negotiators,” you’ll learn to turn breakdowns into breakthroughs. With the insight and tools to get out of your own way, you’ll find new avenues to realizing your dreams.

A book about self management, self improvement, and increased enjoyment of life. It’s about doing all things better by paying attention to ourselves, our decisions, our words, and our deeds, because wisdom comes from within and it is where it must be tended to in order to flourish. This book is ideal for those looking to become more centered, achieve and perceive inner growth and balance, and handle things in a more productive manner. ...

I like the concept of the book. When you are in communication with others there are parts of you that are active and others remains dormant. When you want to be more successful you need to achieve balance in using all parts within you. First step is to be aware about them. And later you can start to change. In the book are the examples and great descriptions of real behaviors hidden behind each part.

I'm so glad I read this book. It's helping me immensely, allowing me to see myself and my abilities differently. I'm already incorporating its concepts and making small changes in how I approach situations.

The way of thinking in this book is helpful for those, who would like to understand their behavior better. It is a toolbox of categorizing your internal and external responses into 4, which allows you to then choose the most optimal one. The more this is practiced, the faster it happens. For me, I realized how I have led most of my life with Thinker with some help from Lover and Warrior, but my Dreamer has been asleep. Now, when I have a response then I take a step back to quickly observe which part of me is speaking and come up with all 4 responses and then I make a decision on how to react. The book is also full of real-life examples and quotes from great people. It does assume that you are aware of great achievers of the world, but the book gives enough context. I missed practical tips. E. Fox gives you a new way of thinking - a goal to achieve - but how you do it is mostly up to you. The book does promote her course, which is much more expensive than the book, so the practical tips are probably there. Still, if you put enough effort into understanding this new mindset then it has the potential to shake your inner world in a positive way.

** spoiler alert ** Very good book! I highly recommend it to anybody interested in personal development. What I liked about the book: It is well structured ; The succession of ideas makes sense and there are some good ideas for reflection Key points which I noted down: - We all have 4 parts (ego/ persona): warrior (ceo), lover (hr vp), the dreamer, the thinker (cfo) - You need to be a bit of everything and know which part to bring to the task- We have 3 directors/ transformers (freedom from ego identification; self actualization): 1) the lookout (keeps an eye what’s going on; warns); 2)the captain (coordinates the big 4 for the situation;) 3) the voyager- building capacity for new roles

This book explained, in a concise way, the manner in which we can create a balanced life. The explanations put a label on the various emotions at work within each of us. A very good read.Buy the ebook now:Winning from Within: A Breakthrough Method for Leading, Living, and Lasting Change

I enjoyed this and gained some valuable insight from it. I found it a little confused in some places and overly simplistic in others.I appreciate that Fox has deliberately placed Jungian archetypes within a business setting, thus I found the narrative devoid of spirituality despite many mentions of Christianity (which I found hegemonic and somewhat off-putting). This for me will always remain problematic, however within a business context and for those new to archetypes I understand this positioning.3.5 stars I've rounded to a 4.

We all have a CEO, CFO, CHRO and COO inside ourselves, but which one take the lead? This is a great book to take a look inside my mind and create my own toolbox in order to change how I interact with the outer environment.

Reading the book, I learned about the inspirational dreamer, the analytical thinker, the relational lover, and the practical warrior. Each one of us has all of these in us - in different strengths. They symbolize the universal values in us. The dreamer:- Page 96: The dreamer continually strives to invent new possibilities, create and improve things. When we are young, we call it playing. In adolescence, we call it daydreaming. As grown-up professionals, we call it, for example, creating. At its core, the impulse is the same. We desire. We experiment. We wonder.- Pages 108-114: The dreamer's power source is intuition. The dreamer's strongest muscle is creativity. The balanced dreamer provides purpose and direction. The dreamer's inner resources include imagination, passion, and hope. Painting the picture for other people by telling a great story that excites them about getting there is one of the dreamer's skills. To really inspire one or more persons, stories about vision should touch the emotions of the person who is listening. - Pages 128-129: Dreamers look at things strategically rather than tactically. What do you dream of doing? In which direction do you want to go?The thinker:- Page 144: The thinker's power source is reason, and her strongest muscle is clarity. The balanced thinker provides reflection, and specializes in the skills you need for conducting analysis. The thinker's sweet spots enable you to 1) apply facts and logic, 2) consider consequences, and 3) look for all sides. The thinker's inner resources include prudence, humility, curiosity, and patience. - Page 150: Some of the best parts of life happen when you let your inner thinker take a rest. - Page 156: Some high thinkers cross the line from confidence to hubris. They become arrogant. The lover:Page 165: The lover values relationships, connects you with other people. A sign of the inner lover is the drive to care, for example for other people and/or for the environment. As you would imagine from the name, the lover is expressed in many roles that we play in life. Some examples: Friend, parent, coach, mentor, advisor, volunteer, caregiver, teacher, sister, brother, son, daughter. If your lover leads your inner team, you might devote your life to helping other people. The lover's power source is emotion, and his strongest muscle is compassion. The balanced lover provides connection and specializes in the skills you need for relationship. The lover's sweet spot enable you to 1) connect with emotions, 2) collaborate with others, and 3) build and maintain trust. The lover's inner resources include openness, generosity, empathy, and acceptance. The warrior:- Page 200: The warrior is the part of you that acts - gets things done and delivered. The warrior is focused on getting results and is fundamentally about claiming your power. The inner warrior emboldens you to stand up and speak out. Your warrior helps you to set boundaries - what you will do and won't do - and stick to them. The warrior is also the part of you that steps forward when you need a push to get moving. The warrior's power source is willpower, and her strongest muscle is courage. The balanced warrior provides protection and specializes in the skills you need for accomplishment. The warrior's sweet spots enable you to 1) speak hard truths, 2) hold your ground, and 3) take action. The warrior's inner resources include firmness, resolve, grounding, and accountability. - Page 215: Warriors in overdrive don't hold back. They can be dominant can at times appear mean. - Page 229: The high warrior is often out of balance with the inner dreamer. Activity has taken on a life of its own, divorced from the purpose or mission behind it.

I received an uncorrected proof of this book from Goodreads and suspect this book will be a practical but reflective book that many readers can use in their daily lives, both professionally and personally, to examine ways in which they can not only connect with others but also achieve a sense of self-understanding.I really think the author did something brave by taking her academic background, her understanding of theory and research, and write a popular, general interest book. In academic circles where the tenured glitterati like to string together incomprehensible, polysyllabic words that mock clear,easy-to-understand prose, this popular acceptance leads to scorn and a supposed mockery of serious scholarship. And,occasionally, the author comes close to treacle. Initially I winced a little bit about the reductive labels of the big four inner negotiators of thinker, dreamer, warrior and lover that "enable your visioning, thinking, feeling and achieving." Yet the terrific examples the author provides overcame this initial criticism and by the end of the book was able to respect the labels she chose. As an example, she shows how just using a coldly analytical approach to every problem (thinker mentality)will not lead to optimal results (especially those who are more relationship focused)to people who have a different mindset. In other words, being able to understand ourselves and how we react to situations is critical in being able to impact how we interact with others. As every manager, parent, heck, every adult knows, we can't always control how others respond to us but we can certainly control our own behavior and this book breaks down these type of responses into an easy to understand manner. I also appreciated the personal anecdotes the author conveys at both her successes and failures. As an experienced negotiator with an international reputation, she comes across as eminently relatable and down-to-earth. Overall, I think the author balances insights into psychology, neuroscience, and behavior into a practical book that the lay reader can honest-to-goodness use to his or her benefit. I highly recommend this book to those readers who want to be better negotiators, communicators and relationship-builders.

I received an uncorrected proof through a giveaway. As a high school teacher, I found this to be an interesting and insightful analysis of leadership. Many of the author's examples come from history, literature, current events, and the world of business. Fox divides her text into an examination of the dreamer, thinker, lover, and warrior, addressing how each aspect can provide both positives and negatives in negotiations and business ventures. Many of the reflection questions at the end of chapters would be useful for anyone who wants to learn more about working with others. It also provided me with insights about viewing student motivations.

I'm always looking for ways to improve my life, and this one hits home with an effective way of looking at your self in an easy to understand manner that will facilitate effective communication with other people in difficult situations. The author's tone strikes a likable human motherly/teacher/friend resemblance all while speaking and articulating in a professional manner. Easy to read and non intimidating all while getting it's message across an easy to understand way of looking and organizing thoughts.

A thoroughly enjoyable way to look inward at yourself and think about things that might be holding you back, and ways to make positive strides forward. The central idea is that we all have strong/caring/analytical/visionary parts of ourselves, and if we do not utilize all of these parts when we must, it holds us back. The "quant" must learn how to build relationships and the relationship-builder must learn how to hunker-down and get stuff done, etc.Recommended.
