British author Lisa Jewell books in order
Lisa Jewell is a British novelist from London. She was born in 1968 and first educated at St. Michael’s Catholic Grammar School in Finchley, which she left in the sixth form to focus on art foundation and fashion illustration at Epsom School of Art & Design.
After spending some time in the fashion industry, Jewell started writing fiction, first as a challenge given by one of her friends and later more seriously. Her first novel, Ralph’s Party, grew out of several chapters she wrote for one such challenge, becoming the bestselling debut novel in the U.K. in 1999.
Fast forward a decade, and she was given the Melissa Nathan Award for another bestseller, her 2007 novel 31 Dream Street.
Exploring the literary world of Lisa Jewell
When people think of Lisa Jewell, they usually think of thrillers—dark, gritty thrillers with twisted plots taking unexpected turns. Jewell combines domestic suspense with all the turmoil going on in her characters’ heads seamlessly, weaving a nail-biting narrative that never lets the reader relax.
A lot of Jewell’s thrillers explore themes of familial relationships, one’s identity and role in their environment, as well as the effects past trauma can have if left untreated.
Even some of Jewell’s more light-hearted books tackle similar issues, albeit in a more slice-of-life fashion. Her first book, for example, a romantic comedy titled Ralph’s Story, deals with issues and themes of love, friendship, and growing up.
Early writings
Jewell’s early writings pretty much all belong to the romantic comedy genre. Novels such as Ralph’s Party and Thirtynothing take it as their mission to dissect the social dynamics of romantic and friendly relationships, as well as all the hardships that hit us once we become responsible adults.
Thirtynothing, for example, is a heart-warming tale about Dig Ryan and Jemima Gold, two friends trying to figure out how to live in their thirties and find meaning in life while trying to balance their careers and friendships and face all of society’s expectations.
On the other hand, One Hit Wonder, her third novel, already shows signs of her later fascination with mystery. In the novel, a shy and awkward Ana dreams of being like her half-sister Bee, a famous pop star. After Bee’s disappearance, Ana takes her place in a group of party animals Bee used to hang out with. But Bee was murdered, and she might have led a secret life, so it’s up to Ana to figure out what happened.
The Family Upstairs series
Recently, Jewell came into the public eye thanks to her two The Family Upstairs novels, both of which cemented her place as a New York Times bestselling author.
The story is a mystery thriller through and through, with several plot lines running in parallel, all converging in ways you would not expect. What could a dead body discovered near the Thames, a dead man with a troubled past found in France, and an ex-pat returning to London with her children after three decades have in common?
Ralph’s Party series
Ralph and Smith are best friends, but their friendship becomes strained when they meet their new lodger, a beautiful young woman called Jemima. Jem likes the place, but she obviously can’t have both men. Who is she going to choose?
On the floor above them, another drama is about to reach a boiling point. Karl and Siobhan are a couple of fifteen years, and seemingly nothing can separate them. Well, except for Cheri, perhaps, their gorgeous neighbor who doesn’t care that Karl is taken.
In what order should I read Lisa Jewell’s books?

“A seize-you-by-the-throat thriller and a genuinely moving family drama.” –A.J. Finn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window
The instant New York Times and #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of the Then She Was Gone delivers another suspenseful page-turner about a shocking murder in a picturesque and well-to-do English town, perfect “for fans of Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, and Luckiest Girl Alive” (Library Journal).
Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England; home to doctors and lawyers and old-money academics. It’s not the sort of place where people are brutally murdered in their own kitchens. But it is the sort of place where everyone has a secret. And everyone is watching you.
As the headmaster credited with turning around the local school, Tom Fitzwilliam is beloved by one and all–including Joey Mullen, his new neighbor, who quickly develops an intense infatuation with this thoroughly charming yet unavailable man. Joey thinks her crush is a secret, but Tom’s teenaged son Freddie–a prodigy with aspirations of becoming a spy for MI5–excels in observing people and has witnessed Joey behaving strangely around his father.
One of Tom’s students, Jenna Tripp, also lives on the same street, and she’s not convinced her teacher is as squeaky clean as he seems. For one thing, he has taken a particular liking to her best friend and fellow classmate, and Jenna’s mother–whose mental health has admittedly been deteriorating in recent years–is convinced that Mr. Fitzwilliam is stalking her.
Meanwhile, twenty years earlier, a schoolgirl writes in her diary, charting her doomed obsession with a handsome young English teacher named Mr. Fitzwilliam…
In Lisa Jewell’s latest brilliant “bone-chilling suspense” (People) no one is who they seem–and everyone is hiding something. Who has been murdered–and who would have wanted one of their neighbors dead? As “Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace” (Booklist, starred review), you will be kept guessing until the startling revelation on the very last page. -

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone returns with an intricate thriller about a young woman’s disappearance and a group of strangers whose lives intersect in its wake.
Young Saffyre Maddox spent three years under the care of renowned child psychologist Roan Fours. When Dr. Fours decides their sessions should end, Saffyre feels abandoned. She begins looking for ways to connect with him, from waiting outside his office to walking through his neighborhood late at night. She soon learns more than she ever wanted to about Roan and his deceptively perfect family life. On a chilly Valentine’s night, Saffyre will disappear, taking any secrets she has learned with her.
Owen Pick’s life is falling apart. In his thirties and living in his aunt’s spare bedroom, he has just been suspended from his job as a teacher after accusations of sexual misconduct–accusations he strongly denies. Searching for professional advice online, he is inadvertently sucked into the dark world of incel forums, where he meets a charismatic and mysterious figure.
Owen lives across the street from the Fours family. A synopsis of Lisa Jewell’s most popular novels
Before I Met You
This is a novel about family and sacrifice. Betty has given up everything to take care of her grandmother Arlette, and now that she is gone, she must do one last favor for her and find out who the mysterious woman in her last will is.
The Making of Us
Daniel is dying, and on his deathbed, he’s decided to tell his friend Maggie the story of his life. The story includes his children whom he has never met: Lydia, Dean, and Robyn. The children have never met each other, either. Not yet, at least.
Thirtynothing
Dig Ryan suddenly bumps into an old classmate, Delilah, the most beautiful girl in school and his first love. But Delilah was also the source of Nadine’s, Dig’s best friend’s, misery. Is the story from more than a decade ago going to repeat itself now that they’re all back together?
Then She Was Gone
Laurel’s daughter Ellie disappeared fifteen years ago, but she’s never lost hope. Things, however, become difficult for her when she meets her new partner’s daughter, who looks exactly like Ellie when she was her age.
Invisible Girl
This novel takes place in a weird neighborhood: Owen Pick lives with his aunt, he’s a nobody in his thirties, and he’s been accused of sexual misconduct; his neighbors, the Fours, find him a bit weird and creepy. Saffyre, a young girl and a patient of one of the Fours, has disappeared—and Owen saw her last.
The House We Grew Up In
The Birds are a comfy family with four children, Meg, Beth, Rory, and Rhys, a hippie mom, and a youthful dad. Unfortunately, tragedy is not picky when choosing targets, and it has the Fours in its scope one Easter weekend.
Roommates Wanted
Toby’s marriage has failed after a month, and he’s left alone in a Victorian mansion. Thankfully, Leah wants to be his roommate—and perhaps something more.
